Based on the Hillman Imp introduced in 1963, the Californian coupe was launched in 1967, the coupe version having a sloping tail, and no rear hatch. The Imp and its variants were developed as a competitor to the Mini, and were the first British production to be rear engined, also the first mass produced British car to be built with an aluminium engine block and cylinder head. Production took place between 1963 and 1976 with just under 500, 000 cars being built by the Rootes Group.
Sold new in 1968 by Norris Brothers of Tamworth, this one previous owner Imp Californian has only covered 49276 miles from new, on arrival in Guernsey in 2014, the mileage was 49002 miles. On sale the Californian was serviced and fitted with a new cylinder head gasket.
The car is in very good original condition, commensurate with mileage and ownership, the paintwork is original as is the interior, which is in good condition, with some wear to the edges of carpets. Mechanically the car was serviced on sale, and just over 200 miles have been covered since.
The Mushroom grey body work is in extremely good original condition, and presents very well, the car is now fitted with period style alloy wheels which show the car off to its best effect. The interior is in very good original condition, with some slight wear to edge of the carpet on the drivers side.
The car was regularly maintained by it’s first owner, and sale to the present owner, the car was checked over and the following parts replaced as part of the last service just over 200 miles ago.
New head gasket, coolant replaced, new oil filter, new air filter, new spark plugs, new drive shaft rubbers, points cleaned and adjusted, new thermostat and gasket, new cam covers, all fluid levels checked.
