Fully Restored Early Series 3 Land Rover Soft-top with Matching Numbers, owned by me for 3+ years.

An original FULLY restored from bear chassis up, early Series 3 with low ownership and mileage with matching chassis and engine numbers – a collector’s dream.

About me – I’m a mature Chartered Engineer (and Scientist) with over 35 years’ experience with Series Land Rovers. As a hobby, I restore selected Land Rovers over a long period. I have no overheads, or time or budget constraints. I am also not associated with the trade – it’s purely for the love of it.

Summary – This Land Rover is an early civilian Series 111 with only 42, 000 miles on the clock. It has received a total nut and bolt ground up restoration over 3 years. It has the all-important matching chassis and engine numbers and comes with its original rust free chassis and bulkhead, and engine. The engine cylinder-head has been professionally converted to run on lead free petrol. The vehicle is, of course, MoT and Tax Exempt, and very cheap to insure.

Before my ownership, the Land Rover spent many years in dry storage at a local dealership, hence the low mileage and ownership (3 previous owners, 1 of which was the dealer). I have the vehicle’s history from the DVLA.

Please do not confuse this Land Rover with the many half restored ‘done up’ vehicles for sale or ones that were a mixture of vehicles with very dubious identification – this is the genuine article. Resplendent in Bronze Green with sand soft top tilt without any ‘owner’ modifications or checker plating - this is the archetypical Land Rover.

Despite that it was in good original condition, I have spent many many hours restoring this vehicle, which included a total nut and bolt strip down, ensuring it remains original, as any serious car collector / investor demands. Please consider following work:

Chassis:
• Complete vehicle strip down. The original chassis was taken back to bare metal with new front outriggers welded in. The chassis was then rust treated and painted with three layers of black satin Hammerite. The rear ¼ chassis is original and solid (very rare).

Bulkhead:
• The bulkhead was stripped with all paint removed. This was found to be in good condition but a new left foot well and A post was welded in for good measure.

Engine/ Clutch/ Fuel System:
• The engine was stripped and cleaned to make sure everything was correct with many new parts, including big ends, output seals, water pump, thermostat, coolant pipes, fuel pump, etc etc.
• The cylinder-head was professionally converted to unleaded fuel, which received new hardened valve seats, valve stems and head gasket.
• A complete mechanical service with all new oil, filters, coolant and ignition system throughout (coil, plugs, points, rotor arm, cap, leads and condenser etc.)
• New fuel tank, sender unit, swan neck with tank mounting kit.
• Carburettor was stripped and cleaned with new fuel lines.
• New engine and gearbox mounts.
• New 3 piece Clutch kit, and Master and Slave cylinders, and flexi-hose.
• Complete new exhaust system and correct mounting kit.

Gearbox:
• Gearbox / transferbox overhaul with new output seals, gaskets and correct oil.

Running Gear:
• Complete and correct new front (9) and rear (11) leaf springs and U bolts.
• New spring bushes, including chassis bushes.
• Front and rear Axle input and output seals and correct oil.
• New Prop-shaft UJs (front and rear).
• New tie rods and clamps throughout.
• New ball joint seals, output seals and end caps.
• New rear axle straps.
• 5 x 7. 50 x 16 wheels and matching tyres.
• Zinc costed swival housings with new seals
• Tracking professionally set up.

Brakes:
• Complete new brake system, including master cylinder, 4 x brake cylinders, 4 x drums, copper pipes, shoes, flexi-hoses and fluid.

Bodywork:
• Bare metal respray, inside and out, up and down in correct period Bronze Green (etch and then zinc primed before application).
• Removed rear tub and painted throughout.
• 2 x New doors.
• New doors tops, including glass and seals.
• New door seals.
• New wing mirrors – correct for that year.
• New front bumper (old one undamaged but had drilled holes).
• New Exmoor ‘Sand’ canvas soft top tilt with all the correct original fittings.
• New hood stick set with all fittings.

Electrics:
• Stripped wiring loam with every cable continuity checked, so all electrics work.
• New side and indicator lights - front and rear.
• New front head lights with mounting kit, electrics and bowl.
• New wiper wiring including parking relay.
• Refurbished heater (working).

Interior:
• New seats – 3 x front and 2 x rear bench
• New rubber mats – front and rear
• All floor plates stripped and painted.
• Sound deadening under floors, and seat box

• A ton of new zinc plated / stainless steel nuts and bolts.
• All invoices retained for the above parts.

Comes with a HUGE amount of invoices for ALL the new parts stated above.

No oil leaks because this Land Rover has been restored properly.

As anyone who understands and has properly restored a Land Rover will know that although they are widely deemed to be a big boy’s Meccano set, they are very hard work to on, with numerous unseen and very time consuming parts to replace to make them right and reliable.

The price does not reflect the shear amount of effort I’ve had to endure, which is about 2, 500+ man hours (calculate that using an hourly rate of £50). Please take this into account when considering cheaper vehicles. This is an excellent investment and much better than any ‘savings’ potential from a bank, plus it’s something that you will be proud to own.
