- 1983 was the last year the Datsun name was used in the U. S. It was also the end of the original Z brand.
- Although it was the best-selling Z-car thus far, very few have survived. Thanks to their robust build quality, they managed to drive on and on for many years with severe neglect. As a result, the number of low-miles, dry, original, and 1-owner examples left is miniscule.
- This 280ZX was built in May of 1983 and sold new by Miller Imports Datsun of Van Nuys, California to the current owner on June 26th, 1983.
- This GL (Grand Luxury) edition was highly optioned from the factory with the following:
Leather seating
Glass T-bar tops with covers
Digital dash display
Automatic climate control system
AM/ FM cassette stereo system
Cruise control
Power steering
Power windows and mirrors
Rear wiper
Digital clock with date and stopwatch feature
- The purchase price was $15, 916. That’s over $40, 000 in today’s money.
-This Z has been with the same owner/ family since new. They lived in the Los Angeles Valley area and often serviced it at the selling dealership. It’s always been well cared-for, garaged, driven regularly, and never neglected.
- Nearly all service records from new are included. Highlights of service history include:
Regular time-based oil services regardless of miles
Most recent oil service (10/ 19 @ 59, 216-miles)
Proper timing on minor and major service intervals
Routine valve adjustments and belt replacements
Replaced headliner
Replaced muffler
- Unlike most of our German offerings, this Datsun was extremely reliable and very inexpensive to maintain over the years.
- The exterior of this 280ZX is in incredible condition considering its age. It is clearly well looked after. The paint appears to be mostly original and verified with a paint meter. The only paintwork was some touch-up/ blending on the hood due to rock chips and light repaint on the right rear due to a traffic incident at low speeds.
- The repairs were minor and there are no visible signs of repairs. There is a small area of clear coat painting on the rear hatch. All the glass is in great shape and is original including the windshield. The original 14” alloy wheels look nice and have no curb rash. They are wearing Michelin tires that are near full tread with no cracking or dry rot, but are dated 2005 and will need to be replaced.
-The brakes have between 35-50% life remaining.
- The interior is equally as exceptional with minimal signs of use. The leather seats show hardly any wear and have no tears, rips, or cracks. The driver seat stuffing is original and soft. The headliner is new and in great shape.
- The carpet has no stains and even the original factory floormats look fresh. The door panels have no warping or scuffs. The dash is remarkably perfect with no cracks or warping. This is further proof it has been garaged its entire life.
- All gauges and digital functions work including the clock. The A/ C blows very cold and the rest of the automatic climate control system operates as it should.
- The cruise control lights up, but doesn’t hold the selected speed. The original radio works properly as does the power antenna. All the interior and exterior lights work including the engine bay light.
- The power mirrors and windows also work.
- This Datsun starts easily with the first try and holds an even idle. It doesn’t smoke and the power is decent for the era.
- The transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping.
- The clutch engages properly with no signs of excessive wear.
- The brakes have a good initial bite with no fading or pulling. The car steers and tracks straight.
- The suspension is original and feels a bit soft. Some new shocks/ struts with fresh tires would be a welcome addition.
- With the upcoming Radwood movement towards 80’s and 90’s cars, finding examples like this are becoming increasingly difficult.
- This last year ZX will be on display as part of the Radwood Royalty at the upcoming show in Irvine, California on December 7th.
- This Datsun passes California’s strict emissions/ smog test and is currently registered to August of 2020.
- This 280ZX comes with two sets of keys including the key for the T-bar tops, T-top sun shield protectors, most service records from new, original bill of sale, spare tire, jack, club lock system, and photo from 1983.
