1977 Porsche 911 3. 0L Targa, G-Series, Narrow Body LHD.
£30k, 2. 5 year nut and bolt rotisserie, glass out restoration.
Purchased in 2016, restored 2016-19, enjoyed by myself last summer, sadly new project forces sale.
Imported from California so totally rust free. Although well cared for mechanically by it’s previous owner (a well known LA fashion photographer), the Targa was cosmetically tired. a decision was made strip down to a bare shell and restore. The wings were removed, no rust was found on any of the inner wings, also the all important Kidney bowls were found to be corrosion free. A small amount of welding was required in the spare wheel well due to a blocked drain hole, apart from this the shell was totally rust free. Suspension, glass, carpets, dashboard, engine and gearbox were removed before painting.
Upgraded to the stronger more powerful 3. 0 Litre engine. Both engine and 915 gearbox were inspected, the compression was tested and found to be excellent. Both cylinder heads were removed for closer inspection, all internals appeared free from wear, we suspected it may have been rebuilt prior to my purchase. compression was found to be excellent, so the engine was put back together along with freshly powder coated tin wear and a new clutch. The valve clearances and timing were set. The gearbox was found to be in good order and so refitted and adjusted accordingly.
The injection system was in poor order and pretty much scrap. This suited me as I have a preference for the simplicity and induction sound of carburetors. I made a personal decision to fit a set of reconditioned Zenith 40 Tin Carburetors, we upgraded these with larger chokes and main jets to fuel the larger capacity of the 3. 0 litre. The Bocshe distributor was then rebuilt by specialists. New spark leads were fitted, and a new Bosch fuel pump installed.
The engine loom was replaced with a new section built by Kroon Wiring Harnesses to exact Porsche spec. Various other electrical jobs have all been carried out by a marine electrician to a very high standard.
Once back together the Targa was delivered to BH Performance to be rolling road tuned, where it received high praise from the technician responsible who remarked “it was very torquey and pulled strongly”, backed up by the dyno sheet.
Seats have been upgraded to the later electronic type for extra comfort (original Tomb stone Black leather seats may be available by separate negotiation), both seats have been fully recoloured and restored.
New carpets have been professionally fitted throughout including hood carpets. A new Momo Prototipo Steering Wheel & Porsche horn push has been fitted. The Targa top was also restored with a new headlining.
All new rubber seals/ door seals, windows, side sill mouldings etc. Euro spec lights, indicators and overiders were fitted to complete the Euro look. Suspension was poly bushed throughout, brakes stripped and overhauled and fitted with new pads. New Goodridge braided hoses fitted. To further improve handling 4 brand new Bilstien sporting dampers were installed. It was then four wheel laser aligned.
Having researched wheel options carefully, I decided to upgrade the “Cookie Cutter” wheels to the factory optional Maxlite polished Fusch 15” which are shod with brand new original factory spec 185/ 70WR 15” Pirelli Cinturato CN36 N4.
The history file only dates back to my purchase in 2015 and is accompanied by some photos of the restoration process.
