Here we have for sale a very early Land Rover® Series 3, being only the 678th Series 3 ever built, and registered on 12th January 1972.
Externally, the vehicle is largely standard – the paintwork is of more gloss spray finish than most we see, and really gives a nice, period look. There are lots of nice features, such as the vintage plates, rear grabhandles, defender-style door mirrors for better visibility, free wheeling hubs to aid economy and reduce front axle wear and 750 cross-climate tyres. There are a pair of rear windows to give more light into the cabin, aiding visibility and making for a more pleasant experience for those in the rear. This gives a pleasing mix of standard period features, with some of the modern comforts which make the on-road experience a little more refined.
The interior is of the deluxe type – there are three front seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. The rear houses a pair of twin benches, allowing for seven seated including the driver, with a load mat to the rear floor, and a Safari Door Card to the rear door. This vehicle therefore gives all the benefits of a Station Wagon – the ability to take all the family, with a light and airy cabin too.
Out on the road, it drives just as it should – the petrol engine is a quiet unit and the larger tyres give a slightly more relaxed cruise, coupled with improved MPG from the free wheeling hubs. It delivers a pleasing period driving experience, which is aided by these additions.
