1954 BMW RS54, One of the only 24 motorcycles, the number 549022, built by BMW in 1954, the mechanics of this RS 54 were restored to their current condition and configuration by the Swiss rider Claude Lambert.
The engine, gearbox and transmission, Lambert told me, belonged to the French pilot Andre Calletet. The RS 54 engine is a masterpiece of engineering. The 500cc DOHC horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine, driven by transverse axles and bevel gears, is specific to this model. Factory drivers Walter Zeller and Georg Meier have won the tourist trophy, and BMW has won the world sidecar championship numerous times with machines equipped with the incredible Rennsport engine. In Claude Lambert's report on the work done, he says he came across an engine rebuilt by mechanics with no RS experience. In Lambert's reconstruction, the Cylinders were "Nickasil" coated and new pistons were manufactured in NUSA, Delemont-Switzerland, "Mahle" configuration with segments for "Nickasil". Very serious work provided by this firm. All the other pieces were verified and the necessary ones were changed. The engine came with a compression ratio of (9. 5), so in its time the engine had to be redone every five strokes. Cleats have been placed to lower the compression to (8. 5), which will increase the safety of shooting in retrospect.
The clutch, titanium and double disc, is one of the factory engines that was not sold to private pilots, manufactured by Joseph Duhem. The gearbox is a 5-speed Lünneman.
The chassis is one of the ten manufactured by Busch and the German BMW Club in the 80's, without number.
