We are reluctantly offering for sale our beloved Mercedes 814D Vario, Which includes part living conversion. 100% ‘fit for purposes with tons of scope to add to this conversion and make it your own.
This vehicle is legally classified as a motor caravan NOT a commercial vehicle. (this is very important). Sorry for the amount of detail. I welcome any questions that a potential buyer might have.
Many (and I am surprised at just how many conversions are still classified as LGV’s (commercial vehicles) but listed as campervans, mostly 3. 5 tonne conversions. Of which many are ALREADY overweight or very near to being so. Sellers will often be cagey about it, some even hiding behind the fact that its ‘professionally converted’. Unfortunately buyers are just as naive and misinformed.
There is no responsibility on anyone other than the owner of the vehicle, to be within the permitted axle weights. Stiff fines and possible disqualification and NO insurance can result in driving a vehicle that is either overweight or NOT being used in its specific class. I. E driving a commercial vehicle that is ‘permanently converted’. Remember the permitted weight is what’s left over AFTER the weight of the van is taken off, so 3. 5 tonne – weight of vehicle (2. 6 tonne) = 900kg permissible weight, 990kg is 10% over and so on, its not difficult to get over 30% = Prosecution, massive penalty & likely disqualification. Weight over each axle brings another aspect to the whole ‘driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition’ element/ fines etc.
This vehicle is 7. 5 tonne and is registered on the v5c with DVLA and recognised/ classified as a motor caravan. It can be driven on a normal car license as long as the driver has C1 classification on the back of their license, (drive up to 7. 5t with combined van & trailer weight of no more than 8250kg). If not A CPC test is required to get this added to a full UK driving license – costs vary but between £70 - £80 with own vehicle or £250 - £300 all in.
This vehicle is easily insured as a motor caravan (a converted vehicle) – cost me £258 per year fully comp.
The onboard Tacograph is redundant (no legal requirement to use it). No operators licence required. No weight restriction (not down plated) so the 3. 8 tonne payload is left intact. No speed limiter (56mph usual for a over 3. 5t) was remapped and taken by Mercedes (normal speed limits apply). If you are after a conversion that can be driven legally without be overweight and remain insured – this is it (its why I chose it).
ALL good and understood and still interested then the details are as follows.
This is a long wheel base (4. 25m length between axels) high top version of the 814d 2. 205m wide with an overall length of 7. 21m. height from inside floor level to roof - approx. 2. 081m.
Overall height from ground approx. 2. 8m. Clearance height 2. 9m - 3. 0m (with roof top arial)
Complete with on board Zig unit fitted to a Leisure battery to control both 12V and 240V circuits, water heater. Led lighting throughout with additional under cupboard reading lights and 12v lighting to sink area.
Separate bathroom/ shower enclosure with Thetford C2 bench toilet – Cassette is accessible through locked access door on the outside of the van.
Kitchen area includes sink, cutlery drawer and microwave above. Hot water is produced by the on board Carver water heater.
Roofline cupboards all round and above the cab (loads of them). Huge amount of under seat storage runs on both sides of the van. Roomy wardrobe for clothes and smalls.
TV/ DVD is fitted and the van has a roof mounted satellite system (inc) for Freesat channels. Can also be used for Sky with a suitable decoder and/ or subscription. Very easy to set up (full instructions will be given to buyer).
Sleeping is set up for two singles or double, the van can easily accommodate more, the front cab seating is driver + 2 passengers. No mattresses are included.
Easy clean heavy duty linoleum flooring.
Previously owned by iconic 1960’s Mersey beat band. Purchased and maintained through Mercedes-benz.
2001 (51) plated is fully MOT’d until 14th July 2021, includes 6 months road tax (Dec 2020).

X 2 brand (new with 5 year guarantee) start batteries that are controlled by a separate isolator/ cut of switch.
This Vario is fitted with the legendary OM904, 4. 2 litre (134hp) turbo diesel Engine. The engine just goes on and on, with its straight four cylinders with overhead camshaft. The OM904 has twice the torque of its predecessor, so is a real workhorse. Injectors are individually regulated for efficiency, handling and smooth running. The OM904 engine is dedicated to simplicity and reliability.
Fuel efficiency is general excellent for the size of vehicle (exceeds all published data) which is fitted with 2 x 55 litre fuel tanks (110 Litre combined, or 110KG in weight terms).
This vario is fitted with a manual 5 speed ZF Gearbox(+ reverse). The brakes are ventilated discs all round and are hydraulic with air operated spring parking brakes. The wheel/ axel configuration is 2 x 4 (twin axel rear) which are 17. 5” rims (205/ 75R17. 5) inspected to correct pressures, torques checked and all good.
Aluminium plating to external, lower level all round the bottom skin. Recently Wax oiled/ undersealed.
No Butane or propane gas onboard/ fitted, buyer can install if required/ needed, on conversions to be insured gas needs to be tested yearly with a gas safety certified technician – many don’t bother, but would invalidate insurance if this isn’t done.
This vehicle has a whopping 3. 8 tonne Payload – the biggest in its class and train weight that can easily accommodate an additional trailer (no tow bar fitted).
Would Suit many different sparts activities such as motorx/ karting etc. could easily be re-configured to include garage area at rear for bikes etc, by simply adding a secondary bulkhead and ramps. This vehicle will take the weight no problem.

Asking price would the be £10500. 00 no offers but would include all relevant changes to re-map (speed restrictor re-instate, mot, taco, V5C reclassification ETC strip out of motor home side and re-lining whole van.
