Grace with pace - the Turbo R of the late 80s/ 90s saw Bentley's return to true 'Blower Bentley' form, with a luxurious and supremely comfortable saloon capable of impressive speeds and the ability to cross continents with a minimum of fuss.
This Turbo R was delivered new by P&A Wood on August 1, 1993 to Wardle Storeys Ltd of Essex. It is presented in one of the most iconic specifications for a traditional-style Bentley, wearing Balmoral Green (with a fine gold pinstripe) over a complementary interior of green-piped Magnolia leather, offset by green lower carpets and a Racing Green leather-trimmed dash.
The turbocharged, 6. 75-litre 32-valve V8 fires immediately from cold or hot and pulls strongly on the motorway, allowing an easy canter of 80+mph and plenty of power in reserve. Being a later Turbo R, it benefits from the uprated suspension, sportier seats (when compared to the Mulsanne Turbo), later cast-alloy wheels and console mounted shifter.
The interior presents wonderfully - the leather trim (covering every square inch of the cockpit from the console up) is in fine condition with no rips or tears, as is the walnut veneer and beautiful marquetry finish on the doors. The cockpit, in particular, on these cars is of such a high standard that simply opening and closing the glove compartment is a joy. The original radio, lighting, air conditioning, heating and electric seats all work as expected, as do the heated seats which are fearsomely warm in their hottest setting. There are few more comfortable places to spend a cold morning than in here.
Importantly, the high-quality exterior paint is all original, with no major repairs needed or having been carried out. Four Avon Turbospeed tyres are fitted and have plenty of life left.
It comes with the original Owner's wallet with handbooks, a service history including exclusive maintenance by P&A Wood from delivery in 1993 to July 2010 and marque specialists since, and the original tool kit.
At 139, 000 miles, this Turbo R is not a lightly-used garage queen hiding potential issues. It is absolutely on-the-button and is regularly used (a 250-mile round trip recent journey was a breeze), and I'd have no reservations about jumping in and driving it across France tomorrow.
