This 1969 Chevy Nova was one of the actual screen cars used on the production of Quentin Tarantino’s fifth movie ‘Death Proof’. The action-thriller car flick was released back in 2007 as part of a Grindhouse double bill with Robert Rodriguez's ‘Planet Terror’ and starred actors including Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd and Zoe Bell. The plot follows a psychotic killer (Kurt Russell as ‘Stuntman Mike’) who stalks and kills young women by crashing into them in his car – very nasty stuff but great car action!!
The flat black Chevy Nova, driven by Kurt Russell (‘Stuntman Mike’) in the film was chosen as the first ‘bad guy car’ as ‘apparently’ it is one of Quentin Tarantino’s favourite classic cars. With it’s sinister matte black paint job, scary skull graphics and nasty Convoy duck hood ornament Tarantino made this understated muscle car look cooler and meaner than ever. The Nova, although slightly neater in size than the likes of the larger Mopar Muscle cars of that era, still has the menacing muscle car curves and aggressive presence. It was a perfect choice for this role!
Although Death Proof is not quite as well-known as other more recent car chase films such as ‘Drive’, ‘Fast & Furious’ etc it is absolutely one that everyone should check out. Being a fan of classic cinema Tarantino refused to use any CGI and therefore all the car stunts were performed in real life and at high speeds. Just watch the Nova crash and the final car chase scene to see for yourself! Stuntman ‘Buddy Lee Hooker’ was actually inside the Nova during the initial horrifying crash scene and put himself in severe danger just to get the best shot. Thankfully, he survived to tell the tale.
During the movie Tarantino pays homage to a lot of classic car chase flicks such as ‘Convoy’ (The Duck ornament on the front hood is same as that used on Kris Kristofferson’s Mack truck), ‘Bullitt’ (The movie car had the same licence plate number as Steve McQueen’s famous green ‘68 Mustang – JJZ109)) ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ (a 1969 Dodge Charger was used as Stuntman Mike’s second car in the film – it even featured the same style of vector wheels as the General Lee), ‘Vanishing Point’ (A white 1970 ‘Kowalski style’ Dodge Challenger was used in the final car chase scene alongside the Charger). There are also many other tributes to ‘70s classics such as ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ and ‘Dirty Mary Crazy Larry’ amongst others!
This particular 1969 Chevy Nova was bought from the film company and eventually made its way to London a few years ago. It was used for exterior camera shots, night scenes and general testing on set. It is one of the few remaining screen cars left in existence due to so many being destroyed during the crash scenes. (Car comes with certificates from Trouble Maker Studios to confirm usage.) As this car had not been used for stunts in the production it is in great shape body-wise and super-solid underneath. It has recently undergone a full bare-metal respray and features new skull decals, hood ornament and re-upholstered interior. The current owner of the car wanted to use it more for cruising so has since had a newly upholstered back seat fitted rather than finishing it as an exact movie-spec car with roll cage etc (ie its NOT really Death-Proof!!). The Nova has also been fully rewired with a brand-new harness and fitted with a disc brake kit on the front.
