THE MODEL
The 997 is fast becoming the most popular of recent 911s, being better built than the 996 before, and yet offering a purer driving experience than the technically superior 991 that followed.
The generation 2 models featured new direct injection engines and in the 3. 8 litre S models, power was raised to 385BHP and 420 NM of torque. It has also proven to be considerably more reliable than the generation 1 variants and the new interior improved in quality too, with the controls still feeling modern today. All models were installed with daytime running lights, whilst the Carrera 4S also featured a unique full width rear reflector strip at the rear.
A manual and automatic gearbox option were offered as before, however unlike previous automatics, the new PDK 7 speed gearbox featured standard, sport and sports plus modes, allowing the owner to select the programme to suit their preferred driving style. Critically for the first time this also meant that cars fitted with this new PDK gearbox, could accelerate quicker than the manual version, with 0-60 mph coming up 4. 3 seconds when sport plus was selected compared to 4. 7 seconds for the manual variant, whilst the top speed of 184mph was certainly sufficient. Purists go on about 2WD 911s, but the 4WD Carrera S is a formidable machine, capable of putting all of those 385 horses down in virtually any conditions on any road.
THIS EXAMPLE
This Generation 2 Carrera 4S with PDK transmission is finished in the stunning combination of basalt black with full black leather interior. It was purchased by Mr Carpenter of Ashford in June 2009, has covered just 29, 000 miles from new and is still in excellent condition throughout today. Additional to the following extensive specification, it has also been retro fitted with a paddle shift steering wheel, cruise control, sat nav and software upgrade by Porsche Centre Brooklands and new 19” genuine Fuchs alloy wheels by JZM Porsche.
