Description
Rickman Jap Powered Metisse Frame number 171 , Engine number 84S 73049 . I think the frame would date back to the early 1980, s and the letter supplied with the Metisse states "Possibly built by "Rhind Tutt" of "WASP" fame . The motor is a single cylinder 500 cc "Big Port" , "Short Stroke" motor , Its not really a short stroke engine in the proper sense of the term which infers a shorter stroke than bore ratio. Its 90 mm stroke is shorter than the 4B engine which is 99 mm stroke. The 84S type engine is not intended to be a high revving engine and it's low speed torque and power is similar to the 4B engine but it will achieve a higher RPM . THE ENGINE that dominated "Speedway" and "Grass Track" events for years and used by "John Cooper" in the 500 cc Single Seat Racing Cars . The history that I have states that this bike was ridden on a number of occasions by "Bob Wright" EX GP Motocross CCM Works Rider at "Farleigh Castle" Home of the British Moto Cross Grand Prix for many years . Also the paper work states the "Metisse" was built by "Julian Wigg" famed for his Speedway success in the 1970, s . The gearbox is a Norton 4 speed , Amal carburettor (Possibly set up for running Methanol) , "Marrelli" magneto , Betor front forks , Bultaco front hub and Huskvarna rear hub are fitted . This Classic "Jap Metisse" has not been used since 2000 and has been in a private collection presented as last raced . It will require re commissioning prior to use and it is a superb combination of competition frame and motor much favoured in the "Golden Era" of "Scrambling" .
