As can be seen from the photographs, this vehicle hosts just about every desirable feature one might hope to see on a ‘good’ lightweight – the long list includes a rare pioneer tool set, NATO hitch, front and rear bumperettes, a full set of military chevron tyres, correct military screw lenses and headlamps, recent canvas, military lifting eyes and bonnet mounted spare with strap to secure.
The interior follows suit in terms of originality and specification having the correct lightweight seating still in situ, military seat belt bar, gun clips, military flyscreens, heater with demist, passenger footwell fire extinguisher and the correct plastic trim to the correct steering wheel and wiper motor cover. There is also a pair of bench seats in the rear which affords seating for seven occupants including the driver.
Out on the road, this lightweight drives as one would expect, delivering a pleasing period drive. The slightly larger tyres afford more relaxed cruising and a recently reconditioned gearbox (always the weak point with a Series 3) shifts nicely so there are no concerns of jumping out of gear or crunching.
This vehicle would be ideal to enjoy even in a UK setting as we find them quite easy and enjoyable to drive, but it would be particularly suited to anyone with an overseas holiday home, or those who might wish to tour Europe. It would also be ideal for US Export. LHD lightweights’, particularly in 12v soft top format with the petrol engine in good condition, do not come along very often and so this is an unusual opportunity to be able to bring this to the market.
In just a few years, this vehicle will be eligible for MOT and Tax Exemption, but of course will be supplied with a new MOT for the new owner. At point of exemption, it would then be possible to use the vehicle abroad on UK plates without having to return it to the UK for an annual MOT – and this would avoid a time consuming registration and compliance process.
