At the 1953 Paris Motor Show, Ghia presented a prototype coupe based on Beetle. Wilhelm Karmann Jr, visiting the show, was so impressed that he decided, in agreement with the Turin body shop, to switch to large-scale production as soon as possible.
After a three-year development (Volkswagen, Karmann and Ghia), the new coupe was presented to the public in 1955, under the name of 1200 Karmann-Ghia. The new and successful body, bolted to the platform chassis, used the mechanics of the Beetle without any modification.
Sturdy, reliable and well built, it nevertheless had the defect of offering very modest performance: the 1192 cc engine of only 34 HP was enough to propel the car to a maximum speed of 115 km / h, with over 25 seconds to reach 100 km / h.
In 1957 the coupé was joined by the convertible version, equipped with the same mechanics.
