Triumph’s 2000 / 2500 formed the basis of the Stag and this saloon shared the same qualities of that coupe but without the snags. Or prices!
Produced to compete head on with Rover’s P6 2000, these saloons and estates were ultra-modern compared with the outdated Standard Vanguard they replaced in 1963.
The only part carried over was the smooth and torquey straight-six, but with a freer-flowing cylinder head and improved carburation. The body was penned by Triumph favourite Michelotti (who did the Herald) and there was independent suspension all round care of MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-trailing link set-up at the rear, the latter which eventually found its way onto TR sportsters.
Offering space, comfort and excellent build quality, these cars were superb mile munchers at a relatively affordable price. The best thing though is that this hasn’t changed; the cars are as comfortable as they ever were and even more affordable. Prices have risen in recent years, but you can still pick up a great example for under NZD25K – for something that in many ways can genuinely rival a modern, that’s seriously good value.
ABOUT THIS CAR
The main thing about these big Triumphs are their smoothness. With this 2500 featuring six-pot power, you’ll quickly fall in love with the effortless pulling power of that longer-stroke engine. This car certainly has the poke it needs and is well suited to cultured cruising where overdrive provides a relaxed gait.
Manual Choke.
The all-independent coil-spring suspension gives an easy ride on normal roads and the power steering allows three turns from lock-to-lock to be used, for quick response, with a small turning-circle.
Thanks to its decent weight distribution and a long wheelbase, this 2500 rides well - earlier models and variants were not the most agile of cars, suffering from a front ‘lean’ into the corner, which was only cured when Triumph fitted a beefy front anti roll bar to the later 2500S model. The improvement wrought by the massive front anti-roll bar is so marked that one wonders why it was not done before, and why it has been left off the other two cars in the range.
This car is a gem to drive. It's got the most beautiful sounding exhaust note, will out corner most mass produced modern cars, and it never fails to attract attention to itself.
Interior is nice and comfy. Lovely wooden dashboard and door caps - all in great order. Upholstery is tidy and original. The seats are large and well padded, the steering column adjusts for rake, and there is ample ventilation from side eyeball and central adjustable fresh-air grilles.
A safe comfortable car with good performance and economy. A fast comfortable car, capable of towing heavy loads.
Excellent vision and ventilation compared to more modern cars.
Spacious boot and big doors.
Good rear seat legroom.
Straight, clean body and nice paintwork.
