The birth of the Spiaggina-type cars took place in the immediate postwar period thanks to the creativity of some Italian coachbuilders who transformed mass production utility vehicles in order to make them suitable for the needs of some wealthy customers, who used them in trendy seaside resorts.
Generally the changes were made on the customer's instructions and were the most varied. Usually they included the removal of the roof and its replacement with a cotton canvas awning, the installation of canvas or wicker seats and the elimination of the side and rear glass surfaces, as well as the access doors.
The name “Spiaggina” derives from one of the first cars of this type, the Savio Spiaggina from 1958, built on a Fiat Nuova 500 platform and mechanics and designed by Mario Boano.
The car, despite being produced in only two copies, immediately became famous in magazines around the world for being photographed with its owners, Gianni Agnelli and Aristotle Onassis.
Probably, the reference to the folding beaches used in bathing establishments also contributed to the affirmation of the term, given that at the time of their presentation, journalists compared this type of cars to "beach furniture".
From the second half of the Fifties to the Nineties, the Spiaggine were built in small series by the main Italian coachbuilders, among these we remember the Moretti body shop in Turin which, after the successes of the 127 and 126 Midimaxi, created the only beach with traction. integral: the Moretti Panda Rock, produced until December 1989.
- Restored car in excellent condition of bodywork and mechanics.
