Description
2002 - Audi TT 1. 8 225 BAM - EY52 FXF
138, 000 miles, 7 owners
BACKGROUND
For sale is my mk1 Audi TT which was supplied new back in September of 2002 by Harold Wood Audi of Essex, and presented in the lovely Moro Blue paintwork. The car features a huge history file and benefits from having had close to £4k spent refreshing the vehicle in the last year alone. Sporting the much sought-after 1. 8, 225bhp BAM engine and a full black heated leather interior, this is now a great opportunity to own a recently serviced, well cared for example of this fast appreciating, modern classic.
I purchased the vehicle just over a year ago now, with a view to using it as my 170 mile daily, commuter car for work. Once I got the car home and gave it a more thorough inspection it was apparent that a few areas needed addressing, so I set about renewing many of the parts listed below in a bid to get it driving the way that it should.
As with all the cars I’ve owned, I tend to get a bit carried away, very quickly as I’m quite particular and OCD about things being right, so more often than not, I end up replacing parts that really don’t need doing just so I know they are done. As the Mk1 TT is now starting to increase in value a little, I thought it was only right that I should give it the attention it deserves, so outlined below are all the parts and items that have been replaced in the last year.
HISTORY AND MAINTENANCE
The car is currently showing around 138, 000 miles, which will increase as its still in constant motorway use for my commute. Now this might seem a bit on the high side, but in my ownership at least, this has been purely motorway mileage for the past ten thousand miles and the car has been used daily as previously mentioned for my big work journey. In order for the car to be used reliably for that sort of mileage, I have made sure that it’s been serviced correctly and addressed many of the numerous issues that can arise with this model and year of TT.

There is a full compliment of owner’s manuals and a fully stamped up service book present, all bound in the original Audi wallet. Accompanying all this are numerous receipts for the work carried out and parts bought. There is only one original key supplied with the car.
INTERIOR
There is a nice, clean, full black leather interior showing only very minimal wear for the mileage. The instrument cluster was originally showing the usual missing pixels from the display, so this has been completely rebuilt by Patrick at Total Tronics in Rugby, so is now fully readable again and it also carries a lifetime warranty. A new set of floor mats and matching boot mat finish off the interior. The original Audi Chorus stereo (with code) is available too to keep things OEM.
EXTERIOR
Exterior wise the car is in an overall good condition, it has been regularly polished and clay barred in my ownership and the paintwork comes up really nicely once cleaned. There is obviously going to be the odd blemish / mark here and there, which is only to be expected on a now 20 year old car. Areas that need addressing are a slight scuff to the front bumper near the number plate and a scratch to the rear bumper. These defects are only really noticeable close up as the rest of the car once polished takes your eye away from them. The alloys although not terrible by any means do have the odd mark on a couple of them, they do however have a full set of brand new centre caps fitted but ideally the wheels need a refurb to return them to a factory fresh look. The car is still completely standard so there are no stupid aftermarket additions to spoil the classic lines.
MECHANICS
With the amount of work that’s been carried out in my ownership alone and with the very recent full service carried out by the renowned Bryn Stilgoe of BWS TT, it’s unsurprising that the car now drives very well indeed. It is both tight and free of any knocks etc, pulling really well through all six gears with no judder from the clutch.
After purchasing the vehicle at the start of last year, I wanted to concentrate on getting the engine running correctly, so I set about replacing many of the problematic sensors that seem to plague this engine as a precautionary measure. So the thermostat, coolant temp sensor, N75 valve, Mass Air Flow meter, crankshaft sensor, cam position sensor and diverter valve have all been replaced. All the parts I’ve changed were renewed using OEM equipment, instead of aftermarket, patent parts, as the engine doesn’t tend to respond well to using cheap or inferior items.
Whilst renewing the sensors in the engine bay, I chose to replace the expansion tank and all the associated coolant pipes with a set of upgraded black silicone versions, as some of the pipes were looking well past their best. Again this is something that probably didn’t need addressing quite so soon, but reassuring for the new owner to know that a leaking water pipe is probably not going to be an issue for a long while at least.
Moving to the handling side of things and the Audi benefits from having had a full suspension refresh; all arms, bolts and bushes have been renewed along with some subtle upgrades to further improve the handling. This includes the use of a set of uprated Eibach Pro Kit springs, Bilstein B4 dampers and some Forge adjustable rear control arms to tighten things up nicely. Further to this, there is also the addition of some Paul Cook, “Cookbots” from CB Auto, which returns the car to the pre-recall era, when the original mk1 TT came as standard with 30mm bushes in the front control arms. This gave the car a much sharper, more precise / direct feel to the front end. This simple “Cookbots” modification, now allows the use of a 30mm bush, which I’ve upgraded with some Superpro Poly bushes, the difference with these fitted is a night and day improvement to how the car originally drove. After all the above was fitted the car was then fully aligned and a brand new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres fitted to finish things off. Also fitted to the engine bay is a Pro-Ram large cone air filter with a David Clarke fabricated heat shield, to improve the air flow and allow the car to breathe a little better, however if this is not to your taste the original air box and panel filter is available and can be refitted.
OVERALL
Everything that I’ve listed above, will inevitably need doing at some point on any TT you buy, its a foregone conclusion. There is a good knowledge base on the Owners Club forums and many of the main problems are well documented on there. I have worked my way through a good deal of them so you don’t have to and you can be assured that this car has been taken care of properly and any problems that have cropped up have been addressed. I needed to do them for my own peace of mind and as I was doing a huge amount of miles on a daily basis and I needed the car to be in a good order.
So to sum things up, yes you can buy these cars relatively cheaply and condition tends to vary dramitically from one car to another and one persons idea of a well sorted car can be very different from another. My car although not the lowest mileage, lowest owners, cheapest or latest mk1 Audi TT you can buy, is however a very well sorted car mechanically, with receipts and history to prove that things have been done.
Having had close to £4k spent on it in the last year alone and it literally having had a full service by BWS TT in the last week or two, a years full MOT as of January 2022 and also having had many of the main issues that afflict this year of Audi TT sorted already, it represents a much safer way to own one of these appreciating modern classics. The car is ready to be driven away and enjoyed.
