Hutch’s car: the 1973 Ford Galaxie 500 sedan that no one gives a second thought too!
A VIN decode shows this Galaxie was born at the Chicago, Illinois plant and is a genuine Galaxie 500 four-door hardtop with 400cu in V8 and two-barrel carb. Sticker price was $3, 833 and just 25, 802 of these 4120lb cars were built.
I searched the internet intermittently for two years before finding this car. There aren’t many 73's out there and none looked worthy of the project I had in mind. My requirements were very specific; it had to be a ’73 Galaxie 500 sedan – not the later LTD variant. There was an irony from the outset; I knew the look I intended to create, but I wanted to begin with the best example I could find and distress it to match the appearance of the TV car. Then one evening in August 2011 I found a two-sentence advert for this car at La Farge Truck Center in Wisconsin. The company explained the Galaxie had been owned by an elderly gentleman who’d recently passed away. Long story short, after a short negotiation that went something along the lines of “How much do you want for it?” followed by “Okay”, Hill Shipping did their thing and it’s been in my garage beside my ‘Starsky’ Gran Torino ever since. See Classic American’s front cover feature ‘Twice as much Starsky & Hutch’.
“The only aspect that isn’t quite correct is the interior – it should be blue, but I’ve conceded that point because it would be criminal to swap a flawless interior for an inferior one. Naturally, it comes with the obligatory detective siren, Motorola radio and red tear-drop roof light.” It’s also autographed by the three principal cast members ‘David’, ‘Paul’ and ‘Antonio’.
I have an agreed insurance valuation of £25, 000 and you will not find another like it.
Make me an offer.
