1974 MGB GT - Rebuilt engine, Citron Yellow, Overdrive, Chrome SOLD

There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices dramatically rising all of the time. There are very few nice cars on sale at the moment, so grab this while you can!

We sold this car to an enthusiast around 7 years ago – he enjoyed using the car a great deal, but owning quite a number of other vehicles, he was struggling to find time to devote to this lovely little car, so we offered to purchase it back! Whilst this car is an older restoration, it’s by no means ‘tarted up’ and is an honest example of the marque – a car that can be used and enjoyed without breaking the bank! It drives very nicely indeed, benefitting from recent mechanical improvements:

• Full engine rebuild – block deep cleaned, bored out to +0. 020”, new pistons and rings, bearings, gaskets and seals throughout, crankshaft polished, new pushrods, new oil pump. The engine had never been fully stripped before and still had its original bearings –proving that the mileage of 88, 000 is genuine. The crank only required polishing so is still running standard (but new!) bearings. Payen head gasket fitted, along with new crankshaft seal and crank pulley seal .
• New clutch, complete with upgraded roller release bearing
• New clutch hydraulics – master cylinder, pipework and slave cylinder replaced.
• Full service – New oil and filter, new spark plugs, new HT leads, back-flushed radiator and heater matrix (new heater tap fitted), new fuel filter, ignition timing set up, carburettors balanced, etc. The car is currently being bedded in on running-in oil but will have another oil service before sold.

5 owners from new, and the service history again shows that the mileage of 88, 000 is correct. This is one of the very last of the factory chrome bumper cars. The car retains lots of interesting factory details, such as the rear numberplate lamps being mounted on the bumper plinth rather than the over-riders – something only done at the very end of chrome bumper production. It also has tinted glass, which was an option for this era of GT.

The previous owner (the one we purchased the car from in 2015!) had owned the car for 32 years and had had a great deal of restoration work carried out over that time, whilst only covering 50 or so miles per year (probably to the MOT station and back!). This work included all of the following, and much, much more:

• A pair of new front wings
• Two new door skins
• Complete new sills (inner and outer)
• New front valance
• Two half rear wings
• New petrol tank
• New grill
• Replacement tailgate
• New carpets, door cards
• Quarterlight pivot pins and springs
• Replacement cylinder head
• Replacement King Pins and stub axles
• New shock absorbers
• Suspension bushes

The car obviously had a full respray once the bodywork restoration had been carried out – I believe in the late 1980s/ early 1990s. Whilst the panelwork all appears to be nice and solid, the paint is, of course, beginning to show signs of its age – it still presents very nicely but on close inspection there is some crazing, minor bubbling here and there and a few areas that have been touched in. It was like this when we sold it a few years ago, and it hasn’t really got any worse since then – and in our opinion, doesn’t really justify painting just yet - as you can see from the pictures, it looks great! However, we have priced the car such that should you wish to have it repainted, it still represents excellent value for money!

The car runs, drives and stops very well indeed. A lot of GTs that I drive are very ‘floaty’, but this one is nice and tight, and rides very well indeed. I’ve been using it to run the engine in following its rebuild, and have been enjoying it a lot! Overdrive engages beautifully, the gearbox is slick and there are no synchromesh issues etc. The rear axle is nice and quiet. The engine fires up healthily and runs very well, with excellent oil pressure and no overheating issues – just as you’d expect from a rebuilt unit! If I was being really fussy, I’d say the carburettors would benefit from a set of new needles and jets, as they’re not quite in balance, but the car is perfectly usable as it is. The car is still on points ignition. The heater blows toasty warm air!

The interior is remarkably original, and in keeping with the rest of the car. The carpets are in good order, as are the dashboard, headlining and door cared. The seats are free from rips and tears but the driver’s seat could perhaps do with a new backrest foam, as it’s a little saggy – but again, perfectly usable as it is.

The car is fitted with Rostyle wheels (spare included), which have been repainted relatively recently, and benefit from a set of chrome trim rings. The car has a single 12v battery conversion, along with a cutout switch. The headlamps have been replaced with halogen units.

All in all, this is an absolutely stunning little car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. No, it’s not a concours-standard show car, it’s an honest and tidy example that can be enjoyed without fear of leaving it parked unattended! It’s not a brand new Japanese hatchback so yes, some ongoing tinkering will be required as time goes on, but I can assure you this isn’t the usual tarted-up mess!
