Here we have for sale this Land Rover® 90, presented in “Desert Storm”, soft top configuration.
As can be seen from the photographs, we feel that this Land Rover® 90 looks and stands really well – the style of the vehicle reflects the military examples that were fitted out for conflicts during the 1980s and 1990s. The colour scheme is not one that you would see everyday, but is certainly eye catching. The vehicle is fitted with a new set of 750×16 military chevron tyres (including the bonnet mounted spare) and these are complimented by recent Wolf rims in the darker shade… all very pleasing. The recently fitted canvas has been thought out well, with the side windows affording better visibility for the driver and a light and airy feel for passengers riding in the rear. Moving to the rear, there is a height adjustable towbar with side steps to aid entry, with both fog and reversing lamps installed. All in all, we think this is a great transition between a military Land Rover® and a more modern 90 – good enough to be seen in, but not so pristine that you would not venture off-road or onto the beach.
The interior houses six occupants with a useful central cubby box for storing items, equipped with cupholders. It is all fairly standard in there, which is good to see. These vehicles were designed to be functional, basic and hard wearing – and this is no exception.
Out on the road, this 90 really does shine, especially when compared to the earlier Series variants – the marriage of coil springs, a mildly tuned 200TDi engine and power steering make this vehicle feel as good as any recently built Defender…. but due to the more basic technology involved and the lack of an ECU, you will not require a computer to repair it in the unlikely event that it fails. The five speed gearbox means that you can cruise at motorway speeds in a manner that you could not were this either a Series Land Rover® or a 90 fitted with the earlier non-turbo diesel engine. The engine, like many other conversions that we sell, was fitted in 2005 in place of an earlier engine that would’ve probably been low on power and less reliable, thus transforming the drivetrain into a much more modern 90. It has only done 56, 000 miles to date, and had only 39, 000 when it was fitted.
This particular example has a very good chassis so would be ideal if you were hoping to hang onto it for a long period without the perilous thoughts and expense of a rebuild. Vehicles of this type, with soft top, power steering, good drivetrain set up with TDi power and that are also good to look at, don’t come up very often and always find good homes. Perhaps this is because they are quite an affordable way into a soft-top 90, whilst being usable for more modern tasks than other counterparts – it is interesting to note that in just five years time, this Land Rover®, with all the modern features of a later variant, will be exempt from road tax and MOT…… so whilst all your friends, with their £40, 000 soft top Defenders’ are awaiting the MOT and forking out substantial sums for road tax, you will be more concerned with seeing how many surfboards you can fit in the back for the weekend camping trip, and how quickly you can get to the beach. This really is an ideal, and all purpose utility vehicle for the family, and promises fun times ahead.
