We own a company called Vintage Motors here in South Africa, and today I am putting one of our personal 1953 Chevrolet Ambulance up for sale.
We have owned the car for just shy of a year. I found her tucked away in a Chevrolet collector's shed. It took us 6 months prior to owning her to convince the owner to sell her to me. The car was completely original barring some paint touch ups that had been carried out at various stages of its life. She was missing her rear emergency lights.
It took us 3 months to get the car back on road to be a reliable daily. We had the cylinder head off and redone, flushed out the cooling system, revisited the wiring, had the complete braking system redone, some suspension bushes replaced and brand new white wall tyres fitted.
All her gauges work, all her lights, indicators work, siren and emergency lights work, including her interior lights that would have allowed the paramedic to do his work in the night.
I have done close to 5 000km, using her almost daily. I did a 500km round trip about 2 months ago, where she did not skip a beat. Not bad for an almost original car that is almost 70 years old!!!
She started life as a regular sedan delivery in 1953, she was then purchased new by the Municipality of Queenstown, who then commissioned a company called Oddys, who were well known coach builders here in South Africa back in those days. Unfortunately I am not sure how long she was in service for. I have managed to trace its last three owners all which who had her in the condition I found her in, belonging to a collector that sold to a doctor that was also a collector that sold to the Chevrolet collector where I was fortunate enough to take over the custodianship.
She is a motoring piece of history, still showing the original charge rate of pre 1984 people would have paid during that time. Her interior is completely original and has never been touched. She runs like a dream, and this will not be an easy sale. Its a very unique vehicle and a serious eye catcher and conversation piece, she gets photograph, videos taken of her every time she’s cruising the streets.
