In 1953, at the Earls Court Motor Show, AC Cars Ltd introduced the Ace sports car. Powered originally by AC’s own venerable 2-litre six, the option of Bristol power from the mid-50s onwards gave the performance the chassis deserved. This low volume hand-built roadster set new standards of ride and roadholding thanks to independent suspension front and rear, and evolved into the mighty Cobra of the 1960s.
Hawk Cars have been building small numbers of high-quality Ace replica body/ chassis kits for some 20 years, and this example is offered with – possibly uniquely – independent rear suspension.
Engineer built and owned, this car is powered by a 3. 5 litre Rover V8 and was completed, IVA tested and registered in 2014. Since that time, the original specification has been continually upgraded, with revisions to front suspension to incorporate Hawk’s tubular wishbone setup, re-routed exhaust system and a complete transformation of the rear end incorporating an independently sprung transaxle assembly with Salisbury Powr-Lok 3. 54:1 ratio limited slip differential.
The engine is a rebuilt 3. 5 litre unit with Edelbrock Performer manifold and four-choke carburettor, Hawk tubular exhaust manifolds and driving through an LT77 5-speed gearbox.
The car is finished in stunning Mercedes-Benz Tealite Blue, with special Hawk leather seats, full black leather upholstery, and Moto-Lita steering wheel. It comes with tonneau and full weather equipment, and has covered less than 5000 miles since built. Sale includes comprehensive build and technical information, and all receipts.
