The Mercedes-Benz W116 is a series of luxury cars produced from September 1972 to 1980
The W116 models were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called the S-Class although previous sedan models had already been unofficially designated by the letter 'S' for Sonderklasse or "special class".
The W116 was named Car of the Year in Europe in 1974
