We are delighted to present for sale this striking Series 3 88?, Genuine County Station Wagon, which we have previously sold back in 2019. It is a very high spec machine, having been rebuilt on a galvanised chassis in times past. Also fitted are parabolic springs along with pro comp shocks, an overdrive and free wheeling hubs. This gives the best possible ride quality, cruising ability at higher speeds and fuel economy. Being a genuine station wagon gives lots of extra features – the interior enjoys all those trappings – deluxe interior with headlining with roof vents in tropical roof, sun visors, alpine lights, deluxe wall coverings, fully carpeted interior with deluxe matting, door cards, deluxe seats to the front and a full original set of rear folding seats. The original interior light also works as it should on the correct switch – and the interior preservation is something we rarely see.
Externally, as the photos show, this vehicle has all the features one associates with a “proper” station wagon… such as the rear mounted spare, vintage number plates, side windows with alpine lights, 750 tyres (an expensive set of Goodyear G90s!), etc etc. The galvanised chassis is a great addition, and although fitted in times past, is still in un-welded condition and sound order. As a station wagon, there are a pair of handy rear reversing lights, aiding the reversing process.
Out on the road, station wagons win the race – they are much quieter and more refined than a standard vehicle, and can transport a family of seven in comparative comfort. The addition of an overdrive with free wheeling hubs afford more comfortable, relaxed cruising, thus making the whole experience more pleasant. The tyres are also slightly larger, being 750s and this also gives extra weight to the gearing ratios – it really is a smooth, refined drive for a Series 3, and offers the best period experience one could hope for.
The sales pack includes a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, listing the build date as 8. 1. 1981, the colour as limestone, and the model as a Station Wagon, so it’s pleasing to note that it still survives in original configuration! The vehicle has only five former keepers since new, which is a very low number. Previous MOTs show just 1000 miles covered since 2018.
Finding genuine station wagons is not easy – finding them in restored condition is extremely difficult – add to that the superb specification, rarity, and colour scheme and this stacks up to be a fabulous truck – and surely a sound investment whilst being a fun, additional family member!
