For sale is my 1990 Mk2 Golf 1. 6 CL 4+E non-sunroof model. I have owned this car since October 2017 and since owning it I have put a lot of effort into getting this car back into a usable state. When I bought the car, it had the original 1. 6 carb engine, but it had been fitted with a lot of inferior parts that I gradually replaced and got back up and going. I used it regularly for my commute to work etc up until the MOT was due in April 2019, which is when I decided to take the car off the road and do the 1. 6 crossflow conversion. I chose this engine as it has similar output as the original GTI (100HP), is a very straight forward swap and would be far more reliable than the old carb engine. It happily keeps up with all modern traffic, pulls nice and strong and even returns 40+ MPG – I have only used 99 octane fuel in this since converting it which really helps this. It only took so long to convert as finding the right donor car was difficult and then the world collapsed with covid so that limited my access to the car for obvious reasons.
The mileage is not accurate as you will see on the MOT history. The clocks had stopped working at some point, but this did not put me off as the car was very very solid and doesn’t have a great deal of wear and tear associated with a high mileage car. They work now without issue as I replaced them for a working set. Please don’t let this put you off, I certainly wasn’t when I saw the car and it is in far better condition now than when I bought it.
This is genuinely one of the best Mk2s I’ve owned. It is very honest, doesn’t have any dodgy paintwork – it is all original – has NONE of the usual structural rust that Mk2s suffer with, has the straightest, most solid sills I have ever seen on a Mk2, has all of its original brake pipes and the interior is very, very good. No saggy headliner, no holes in the parcel shelf, no missing pieces of trim, no mismatching screws or fittings and even has the original radio blank. Although, it does have speakers and an aerial fitted so you can fit a radio if you choose to do so.
Aesthetically, the car is far from perfect. It has scratches, small dents and areas of SURFACE ONLY rust in a few places. There is damage to the LHR arch (shown in the pictures) and molding and the car has been keyed on the LH side. Also, the bonnet has dents in it, not sure how they happened but they are there. Since my ownership I have not rectified any of this, choosing to concentrate on the mechanics as the bodywork is far from poor. I personally believe that this is a better choice than having it buttered up with a dodgy repair. As I have said, it is a very honest car, nothing hiding beneath bodyfiller or poorly mismatched paint.
Details below on the conversion and parts used:
Full 1. 6 Crossflow Engine Conversion (Engine Code AFT) removed from 2000 Mk3. 5 Golf Cabriolet with 115k miles. Conversion included: full engine harness, fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel filter housing and brackets. Immobiliser was fully retained using a brand-new Corrado ignition barrel and key with the chip swapped to the new key. Diagnostic port retained so all codes and adaptions can still be checked/ changed. When the conversion was done the following parts were replaced – Cam belt kit, Inlet and exhaust gaskets, rocker cover gasket, water pump, cooling flanges, auxiliary belt, full clutch kit, gearbox seals, front engine mount, all service parts, ignition coil, clutch cable, new Lemforder bottom arms and front brake hoses, Brembo standard front discs and pads, Mk3 Golf heater matrix, Golf G60 radiator, new battery.
I converted the rear brakes with brand new genuine VW Up! stub axles/ bearings and drums, backing plates, shoes etc. This replaces the old style taper bearings, improves the rear brake efficiency slightly and means no more adjusting bearings every few thousand miles. Very simple swap that has a lot of advantages.
I have most of the receipts, not all, but most of them to back up the work and parts.
It also has the following upgraded parts – BC Ultra Low coilovers including top mounts and bearings, TrackSlag 2. 25” Comfort stainless exhaust and new hangers, AEZ 7x15 alloys with 195/ 50/ 15 Toyo Proxes, Ram Air induction kit (Mk3 Golf 2. 0 GTI version)
Since the conversion the following parts have been replaced – Both bottom ball joints, Coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sensor, RH steering rack boot, both rear light seals, side repeaters replaced with genuine Hella parts, new O2 sensor and decat.
I highly recommend that you come and view this car and I am sure it won’t be a disappointment. It is not without fault, but it is a very good car with plenty of life left in it. If the bodywork were to be addressed this would be a phenomenal car.
