This manual 412 - one of only 24 right-hand drive cars built - started life as Maranello's demonstrator, where it was spec'd in the fabulous combination of metallic black with a blue interior by MD, the late Sean Bealey. It was one of just three manual 412s registered in the UK in '87 and believed to be the only RHD manual 412 ever made in this colour combination (they look best in more subtle schemes than 'Rosso').
This actual car appeared on the front cover of Fast Lane magazine in March 1988. In his report, Peter Dron described the 412 as "vastly superior to its predecessor [the 400]" and concluded "I still cannot explain why the 412 is not more highly regarded." He also referred to the comment of then Lotus designer, Peter Stevens, who described this generation of Ferrari as "the most beautiful production car of all time."
Since 1987, this car has had a further five owners, including famous DJ, Chris Evans. I have owned the car since 2012, in which time the car has been featured in both the Ferrari Owners Club magazine and Classic Motoring magazine (twice). It also features in an 8-page feature in the March 2023 issue of Classic & Sports Car magazine and in the Ferrari Legends bookazine. I have covered around 19, 000 hugely enjoyable miles during my ownership. It is a fabulous touring car and has been to Spa and the Loire. Because of regular use and careful maintenance, it doesn't have all the problems in store of a Ferrari that has seen minimal use.
The history file is as complete and comprehensive as you'll ever see and for the last decade it has been maintained by John Pogson's Italia Autosport, where no stone is left unturned. No expense has been spared in keeping this in car superb and original condition, including a full bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system and manifolds.
Today, the 412 has 58k miles recorded and is well known in the Ferrari Owners Club. As it has been used regularly (in good, summer weather), year in, year out, this is a car that's ready to be enjoyed. It represents a fantastically affordable way into owning a classic V12 Ferrari, with the 412 being the very last model to enjoy the fabulous (chain-driven, no cambelts!) Colombo V12, as used in the Daytona and other models worth hundreds of thousands. It is, of course, complete with its manuals and Ferrari-branded tools.
