SLK stands for Sportlich (sporty), Leicht(light) and Kurz (compact). The SLK Klasse was introduced as a brand new 2 seater compact roadster model for Mercedes Benz in 1996 with the R170. Sitting below the SL but with an innovative (and very unusual at the time) folding hardtop roof that offered the best of both worlds (transforming the car from coupe to convertible in seconds), the first generation of SLK was a resounding success and proved to be a popular conquest model for the marque.
This second, very stylish edition of the SLK was launched in 2004 at the Geneva Motor Show and entered production shortly after. It took a giant leap forward over the first generation in terms of quality, driver involvement and all-round sophistication. It was slightly larger in every direction, better built, more aerodynamic, more fuel efficient and with significantly more torsional rigidity than it's predecessor, plus greatly improved ride and handling. Mercedes Benz engineers took the opportunity to revise and improve the folding hardtop roof, known as the 'Varioroof', and it now took a mere 22 seconds to turn the car into an open-top roadster. It also featured an abundance of safety equipment, such as adaptive front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, seatbelt tensioners, force limiters for all seats and solid roll-over bars behind the seats helping to prevent injury in the unlikely event of an accident. This was also the first car to feature an innovative new system called 'Airscarf' that blows warm air around the occupants necks. The system now features, at least as an option, on all Mercedes Benz open-top vehicles.
The R171 was designed by the award winning Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG, Gordon Wagener, who devised the long-running Mercedes Benz design style 'Sensual Purity'. He designed many of the brands most notable cars, including the legendary SLR McLaren. Whilst the SLR McLaren is an extraordinary performance model, it's easy to see the visual similarities between the SLR MacLaren and the R171 SLK, especially in the F1 inspired 'nose cone' styling at the front fascia. It's a good looking car- this version being, arguably, the best looking in the history of the SLK/ SLC range.
This particular SLK comes with the 3. 0 litre V6 engine producing a healthy 227bhp with an impressive 220 ft/ lbs of torque. It sits in the middle of the available engine range and is the 'sweet spot' in our opinion. The power delivery is impressive and confidence-inspiring without ever feeling like it's too much for the chassis. It's perfectly suited to a spirited cruise and can achieve startling performance figures when you really feel like it, but without being so thirsty that it costs an absolute fortune to drive it. The fuel economy is surprisingly good for such a sporty rear-wheel-drive car and the optional seven-speed automatic transmission fitted to this car reduces CO2 emissions significantly. There are few rivals that can match the SLK's mix of running costs and performance in this sector.
The upgraded leather upholstery has been cleaned and conditioned using products from the excellent 'Furniture Clinic' range and is in excellent condition for a 16 year old car- there are no scuffs or rips anywhere. The interior of the car is in fantastic condition, as befits such a well-maintained, low-mileage car. It's fitted with a Parrot system that enables bluetooth connectivity for music and telephone purposes.
The exterior is equally impressive- the black paint is gleaming. All 'car park' dents and blemishes have been rectified and the alloy wheels are looking fabulous. The car is presented impeccably, having just been the subject of a comprehensive 'Diamond' valet from our partners at Carla's Valeting, including paint decontamination, ultra-hydrophobic sealant to bodywork and glazing, headlamp restoration and premium bodywork wax.
On the move, the 3. 0 litre engine pulls strongly and the ride and handling are solid and settled. It 'feels', as it should, like a car that has been treated well by previous owners. The levels of ride and handling are impressive, aided by greater feel and sensitivity from the variable assist power steering system. The 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox, advanced for it's time, behaves impeccably and can switch between sport and comfort modes depending on your mood.
Mechanically, we have just had the car fully serviced and checked over by one of our preferred specialists, so it comes with the reassurance of knowing that everything works as it should. Scroll down to see a complete list of every service and MOT performed on the car and you will see that it has been extremely well looked-after. Don't forget, even if something should go wrong, the car is covered by a comprehensive Premium Warranty from Blue Chip for a full 12 months from purchase. How many 16 year old cars come with a comprehensive 12 month warranty?
You will struggle to find a better example than this, especially with such a good provenance, a full leather interior and that all important 12 month warranty. The second generation SLK-Klasse is already a desirable future-classic, with prices moving up on good examples like this one. If you can keep the car in such immaculate condition as we offer it now, we are sure that it will make a fantastic show car before too long.
