Description
History:
The Mercedes Benz 136 series was the first development after the Second World War. With this series, the S-series was born, which was later - and still today - applied to the large saloon. The versions designated with "S" have since also been called and used as executive cars. The Mercedes Benz 170 built as a saloon and cabriolet was traditionally equipped with fine leather and wood. The workmanship was considered exemplary even then. The elegant and originally two-seater cabriolet (with a small additional bench seat for two people in the back) was the absolute top model of the brand at the time and the epitome of luxury. Only 830 examples were produced in the three years it was built, making it a sought-after classic with high value potential. This handsome convertible was first delivered in Zurich on 4 May 1950. In later years, it came to a collector in eastern Switzerland who had the vehicle completely restored. Today, the perfectly functioning example is still in almost new condition. Worth mentioning is the original Becker radio, which was an expensive option even back then.
Bodywork and paintwork:
The high-quality restoration is exemplary in this vehicle. Even today the bodywork is immaculate and the paintwork without damage or inclusions. The professionally chrome-plated parts present themselves in the same way as the paintwork, and the glass and fittings are also as good as new. The soft top with the bar opens and closes without warping and seals relatively well. Only in heavy rain does a little water seep into the corners, which can be easily wiped away with a microfibre cloth.
Interior:
High-quality, vegetable-tanned leather is crucial for seating comfort and the longevity of the interior. This also applies to this Mercedes Benz, where only selected material has been used in accordance with the original pattern.
The dashboard, instruments and switches all have their function and are easy to operate. The original Becker radio is complete, but not in operation. The boot is lined and complete, including spare wheel and on-board tools.
Engine and mechanics:
In 2016 the engine was completely overhauled and fitted with new pistons. The parts are original, which means that one or the other component such as the alternator, starter and fuel pump may show weakness in the coming years and need to be overhauled. At present, all components are in good working order, an existing water leak has been repaired and the starter electrics have been overhauled. The engine compression is perfect and even the exhaust values are very good. The clutch engages without delay.
Chassis:
The chassis has been checked and is in revised original condition. The brakes were overhauled a few years ago and are hardly worn. The brake hydraulics are tight and in regular working order. The design of the brakes requires braking after a longer period of standing, so that all four wheels decelerate with controlled pressure.
The underbody of the vehicle is amazingly beautiful, without any injuries and sealed to a high standard. It should be noted that the undercarriage of this classic needs regular greasing.
Driving experience:
The chic convertible belongs to the pleasure-seeker. In today's road traffic, you can drive along in the city as well as in the countryside without getting in the way. Motorways are to be avoided, as constantly high revs are not tolerable for engines of this age. 52 hp on 1500 kg with two people in the car is not a sporty value, but it is quite enough for a trip with friends or family. The overview to the front and sides allows taking in nature, to the rear the soft top restricts the view. Driving in the dark requires good eyesight, because the light of the 170S has nothing to do with halogen or LED.
Recommendation:
The overall condition of this 170S can be described as excellent. The 170S is a wonderful and reliable classic car with which one can stroll and even go on trips. And it is one of the more interesting vehicles for collectors of high-quality restored and rare classics.
