The Silver Spur was the moniker adopted by Rolls-Royce for the long wheelbase versions of the Silver Spirit and belonged to a new generation of models that also included that marque's Flying Spur, Silver Dawn, Touring Limousine and Park Ward, and the Mulsanne and Eight Series models of its sister company, Bentley. Penned by Fritz Feller, the range was first represented at the 1980 Paris Salon and was a welcome replacement for the long-serving Silver Shadow and its siblings, with a price at launch of £85, 609 for the 4 inch longer Silver Spur. Many of the changes behind the development of the new car were due to impending safety legislation. The Spirit of Ecstasy was designed to retract into the radiator shell upon impact, there was better ride comfort and a new suspension system with Girling automatic ride height control. Mechanically the Silver Spur’s naturally aspirated 6750cc V8 provided 237hp@4300rpm via the GM TH400 3-speed automatic. According to rrsilverspirit. com, 85% of the 6, 214 Silver Spurs made were built to left-hand drive specification. Indeed only 124 right-hand drive Silver Spurs were built during the 1982 model year.
Leaving the Rolls Royce Crewe works in 1982, and first registered as ‘NYV 51Y’, this example was supplied to the first owner by Jack Barclay of London. Finished in the factory’s Magnolia (paint code 9510418), this long wheelbase Silver Spur possesses the original and standard Everflex roof, complemented by Dark Brown trim and Brown carpeted interior. Original glass is still in place fitted all around; each pane is etched with the car’s original, London registration number ‘NYV 51Y’.
In February 1989, this example was purchased with c. 9, 800 documented miles from Stratton (Wilmslow) Limited, with the original 1989 invoice on file, and had been in the same family ownership for over 20 years. Indeed, ‘HBA 326Y’ has covered just c. 16, 000 since 1989. In 2014 a dealer in Kent stated the displayed mileage as just c. 18, 500. Following private registration plate allocations over the years, now as ‘HBA 326Y’, the Silver Spur displays just 26, 800 miles at the time of its last MOT in July of 2022. There have been just 6 former keepers since 1982.
‘HBA 326Y’ is offered with a comprehensive history file that includes a documented MOT history and receipts and invoices for jobs or servicing carried out by marque specialists or bills for parts purchased from Rolls Royce parts suppliers such as Flying Spares. Stratton (Wilmslow) and Independent Rolls Royce and Bentley Specialist, Bowling-Ryan Ltd, were parts and suppliers of maintenance into the mid-1990s.
2016 saw the purchase of a reconditioned GM TH400 gearbox from Flying Spares, with fitting by Chester Automatic Transmission Centre. Other maintenance has included the following: A new battery, alternator repair and service in 2013; lower ball joints in 2014-15; a service, auxiliary belts replaced, a door solenoid replacement and gearbox fluid in 2016. A replacement high torque starter motor was fitted along with spark plugs in 2017; a handbrake and air-conditioning service in 2018; oil and filter in 2020; and a rear damper kit and height control valve in 2021.
The Silver Spur is also accompanied by a full Rolls Royce tool kit and jack in the boot, along with the V5C, two keys and a Car Check report. There is a Rolls Royce owner's handbook present.
