The Porsche 930, as the early 911 turbo is known, has become a legend and has the magical combination of beautiful lines, an aggressive look, a reputation for being dangerous for inexperienced drivers and a turbo. While nowadays there is almost no car with a fuel engine without a turbo, the Porsche 911 has made the ‘power booster’ how the piece of technology is still known today.
And for good reason, Porsche launched the 911 Turbo in 1975, a car equipped with the 3. 0 six-cylinder boxer with a large KKK turbocharger. With a compression of 6. 5:1, the engine delivers 260 horsepower and a huge load of torque. The power source of the 911 is so aggressive that it quickly earns the car the nickname ‘Widowmaker’. The large turbo does little at the bottom of the revs and comes in hard in the middle of the revs in one go. Exactly the area in which many owners are accelerating out of a highway ramp or long curve at the time. Many a 930 Turbo is written off in this way.
This beautiful copy dates from 1977 and that is the last year in America that the beautiful names Turbo and Carrera can both be found on the hood, a little later only Turbo remains. So a primal Turbo.
This Indischrot (or in English Guards Red) 930 is no stranger to us, we sold the car to a loving collector in 2008 and now, 13 years later, the car has come back to us from the same owner. The owner was not one to use his cars much, the 930 has an almost virgin 39, 000 miles, just over 60, 000 kilometres. The car is extremely original and not messed up. Porsche confirms by means of an official certificate that the engine and gearbox are Matching Numbers.
The outside of the 930 is to get through the proverbial ring. Very sleek and with perfect paintwork, which not surprising after only 39, 257 miles. The body has no damage and all parts are very tight. The black details such as rubbers, door handles and the finish of the early, still flat rear spoiler are also in healthy condition. The only modifications that have been made are the European headlights and the narrower bumper rosettes at the rear, but almost everyone will see that as a plus.
The dark interior is also in excellent condition and matches the overall condition of the car. The seats have clearly suffered little and the same applies to the steering wheel, gear lever and other controls. The meters from VDO, which still display the speed and distance in miles as original, are also in new condition.
Then the original Matching Numbers 3. 0 turbo, an engine that originated in the RSR and was supplied by Porsche with a huge KKK turbo. The Porsche 930 Turbo was pretty much the fastest production car on the market in its time, accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/ h in just 5 seconds. Mind you, we are talking about 47 years ago!
The handling is also great, with a Turbo getting a lot of modifications compared to a Carrera. The suspension was revised and larger brakes were fitted. The gearbox is also stronger than a Carrera, in order to handle the enormous torque and power.
The technique of the Porsche is very healthy and it must therefore be a pleasure to make many kilometres with this car next spring. The wide tires in the widened wheel arches have recently been renewed so that grip will not be lacking.
A beautiful 930 Turbo, in the right version and with the right specifications. The fact that the Porsche is also Matching Numbers is the last puzzle piece that completes this car.
