Description

The Alfasud was presented in 1971 at the Turin Motor Show as Alfa Romeo's first front engine front wheel passenger vehicle. It incorporated several principles its Austrian creator Rudolf Hruska had previously developed with Cisitalia, Fiat and Porsche. The engine's Boxer flat-4 cylinder arrangement allowed for low center of gravity providing for superior class-leading handling. Cornering was sharp from its rack and pinion steering via Mac Pherson struts matching the rear Watts-linked beam axle. Once the 2-door sport Turismo Internationale ti edition of twin choke Webers and 5 speed gearbox was unveiled, Alfa Romeo decided to further explore Alfasud's handling potential in the track. In 1977 Alfa Romeo recruited the most talented drivers from each European country including Gerhard Berger to race Autodelta-prepared race cars in Trofeo Europa Alfasud.
The Alfasud offered was produced in ti trim in 1976, the very year Autodelta produced Trofeo Alfasud ti cars. Two decades later it was acquired by an Alfasud collector and historic rally driver to be prepared for competition rallying by Tsagaras Motorsports. Weight was addressed via removing all but dashboard trim, fitting lightweight insulating cards along with Perspex glass. The body was extensively welded with a Sassa-provided reinforced roll cage was installed. A 1. 5 Ti engine was prepared by Motori Gerovasilis with forged Autodelta pistons and rods, lightweight crankshaft, cylinder-head porting and 38 Webers to deliver 120 bhp and 14. 8 kg/ m to the front wheels via a 5 speed short ratio gearbox. The factory brakes were converted to power assisted rear wheel handbraking for hard cornering. The Alfasud has since competed to a local winter rally prior to the 25th Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique. It is now offered fully serviced and recently certified with parts including snow and rain tires over Alfasud Cromodora 13in wheels.
