ONE of the last built , this 1982 registered Maxi 2 1750 is now MOT TAX AND ULEZ EXEMPT ..
Very low mileage for a 41 year old, and apparently within same family from new, this very solid and original car has been stored for many years (just visiting the mot station by the looks of it) and was felt worthy of a £4, 300 re commission for use in 2019 . you can view the mot history online , nothing nasty to hide there .
Cigar lighter unused, the ashtray has never seen ash, just texaco and green shield stamps (remember those) collected when filling up are still in there from the 70s, and the old tax discs too.
sills all original, solid , no patches or gooey black under seal, quite amazing really.
The Nautilus blue bodywork is straight, although dull and unpolished looks great that way in my opinion. All the arches and tailgate are really nice and original, no filler, some rust on the front door bottoms, but have left as is, original so you can see it as it is.
Front seats are good , rear seat tops are sun damaged, headliner is great, wood dash is lovely too , front carpet mat not great- and taken out to show off the lovely original floor pans in the front and boot. There are a nice set of seats in grey and door cards that are included in the sale if you wish .
Starts on the button, sounds sweet and and drives superbly (see video in action!), performs well and gets lots of attention- ("my dad had one of those" etc ) no ULEZ / road tax or mots to worry about , cheap insurance and increasing values i guess she is making sense. As you may know the Maxi was designed for all the seats to fold flat so you can sleep in it ! it was the first ever hatchback / estate too, designed along with the classic Mini as its big brother by Alec Issigonis, (Mini-Maxi) i have video driving this car today (see the website link -arriving soon page) ..
Austin made half a million and this is one of the very last 500 or so built i believe, and one of only a few hundred left now in the UK.
Now gaining recognition as a practical classic, asking prices for prime examples are heading up towards £10k now it seems.
Selling as an ongoing project or use as is , all in all a very genuine car, and with a little effort could look very smart i think. and is offered here for less then the cost of the recent substantial mechanical works (£4300- see invoice)
Nice little project to run around in as summer is coming, with loads of potential to easily improve cosmetically if required or use as is .
