Code named “Erica” the third generation Escort was launched in September 1980. With front wheel drive, hatchback body, independent suspension and new CVH engine the car was an immediate success and was voted European Car of the Year in 1981.
In 2003 Charles Pollington, (RN Retired), an active member of the Civil Service Motoring Association, was looking for a fun car that he and his wife could use for Sunday runs and the odd overseas road trip. The Escort was purchased from Sizzy Automobiles (opposite Milestone Classics current site) for the princely sum of £2, 495 and proved to be the perfect acquisition. The Escort completed many CSMA events over the next 20 years including four tours of France and a visit to the Isle of Man – all the rally plates are stored carefully in the boot.
Always fastidiously maintained today the Escort Cabriolet is one of the straightest and most original examples that you could wish to own. The vehicle is unrestored right down to the original factory hood and has never been near a welding torch. Viewing/ driving the car is like stepping back in time right down to the trademark ‘cloverleaf’ alloys, lovely original interior and hood. There is just the odd paint chip commensurate with age and very careful use.
On the road the car drives very well - the five-speed gearbox means the Escort easily copes with modern road conditions – and comes with windbreak and small electric blanket that Mrs Pollington used on colder days with the hood lowered.
The large history file has MOT’s back to 1988 allowing us to warrant the mileage of 52k miles, stamped (12 stamps) service book, old registration documents, Bills of Sale (x2) lots of invoices, original book pack, rally plaques etc. etc.
As Charles has indicated in his open letter to the new owner “It is with a degree of sadness that, due to my age and decreasing mobility, I have to part company after almost 20 years with a car that has given my wife and I so much fun”.
This is one of the most original Mk3 Escorts Cabriolets that you could wish to find and exactly the type/ standard of car that Milestone Classics love to find and bring to market.
As a bonus the car will be 40 years old early in 2024 and therefore MOT and Tax exempt. A remarkable Escort that should not be missed…….
