There is only one car that can be compared to a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet and that is the Rolls-Royce Corniche Cabriolet. Both were around 70% more expensive than the sedan versions, both were only produced to a limited extent because of the high production costs and the high proportion of manual work. Both revel in precious wood and fine leather and were reserved for a small, wealthy group of buyers who could choose from a variety of colors and special equipment - and thus drive the price up even further. Only 2, 729 copies of the Mercedes 220 SE Cabriolet were produced in 4 years from September 1961 to October 1965. Here you have the opportunity to purchase one of these dignified travel convertibles.
If you steer this country yacht openly on a winding country road on a sunny autumn day, let your gaze wander over the precious wood dashboard with its sparkling chrome and loll in the original leather of the wide armchairs, then you will understand why Janis Choplin once sang about Mercedes-Benz and not just any other other brand. In a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet, even the drive to the bakery becomes an enjoyable short trip. The much-vaunted deceleration takes place here after a few moments. Unfortunately, only a few hundred people in the world are still able to drive in such a dignified manner today.
This convertible was ordered by a doctor on October 15, 1964 from the Mercedes-Benz agency Gernandt KG in Wetzlar. On January 20, 1965, the vehicle, manufactured in "DB 050 white" with "cognac leather upholstery", was registered at the Mercedes-Benz dealership and three months later registered with the doctor. He drove the magnificent convertible for 16 years. In 1981 the owner changed to Eiterfeld-Arzell and in 1989 to Mannheim in a private collection. This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet has been in one hand here since 1989, i. e. for 34 years. It was driven here with a red 07 classic car number and has taken part in numerous classic car events.
The well-kept convertible still has its original leather upholstery, the sought-after ivory-colored steering wheel, beautiful wood, a legendary Becker Grand Prix radio with station search and contemporary additional instruments in a discreet wooden console - a very nice detail.
The power steering, which at that time was still an extra that cost DM 550, and the manual gearbox are very pleasant. The automatic transmissions of the time were not very effective, swallowed up a lot of power and usually shifted late and a little rough. With manual transmissions, the driver sorts the gears as he pleases and chooses the shift points himself. The result is that you'll be snappier, if you want to be snappier at all, because the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet is a laid-back cruiser.
There are great historical documents for the car itself: the original, brown cardboard cover letter from 1965, confirmation of purchase contract with new car invoice, the original operating instructions in an imitation leather folder and various earlier invoices. Needless to say, this is an original factory convertible and not a modified coupe.
Before delivery to its next owner, carry out the main inspection again and carry out a comprehensive inspection before delivery.
Conclusion: This Mercedes-Benz 220 SE factory convertible differs from most other specimens on the market through its properties: There is the German history with complete owner history. You can tell exactly what year it belonged to whom. The well-preserved original leather gives the car character and authentic dignity. Plus, with a leather interior that's still handsome after 58 years, you can tell the car has always been in good, caring hands. It has always been moved, has beautiful details and even still has the original on-board tools. The expensive top is new.
