Description

History:
The two-door Abbott Lightweight Coupé, based on the Bentley R-Type chassis, represents a special episode in British automotive history of the 1950s. The cars with design no. 3843, built between the end of 1952 and the beginning of 1955 in a production run of 14 examples (and one prototype), also document the high point in the history of the company E. D. Abbott LDT. based in Farnham, County Surrey, which was founded in 1929 and emerged from the aircraft industry. At that time Abbott of Farnham Coachbuilders & Engineers had been working on a coachwork design with the aim to put the coachwork in larger numbers on the chassis of the new Bentley. This all the more as a promising prototype based on the Bentley Mark VI named "Bentley Farnham" had been built in close co-operation with the factory. In addition, a number of Bentley Mark VIs had already been fitted by Abbott with very attractive convertible bodies which met with great approval. It was therefore not at all far-fetched for Abbott to trust that in the near future a contingent of Bentley chassis would also become available to go down in history as "Abbott". This example comes from a 2nd Swiss collector's hand and has been fully restored in Switzerland. This immaculate classic can be taken on long journeys and enjoyed as well as entered in all Concours d'Elégance. For viewings and detailed information, please make an appointment in advance. The vehicle is presented and offered for sale at the Oldtimer Zentrum Ostschweiz in St. Margrethen.

Bodywork and paintwork:
The immaculate aluminium bodywork was polished to a shine during the restoration and the paintwork was completely rebuilt. The entire surface is concours worthy and the paintwork is without any fine scratches or spots thanks to its professional sealing. All doors close perfectly and show remarkably precise gaps.

Interior:
The seats have been reupholstered and freshly covered with high-quality Connolly leather. The trim and carpeting have also been uncompromisingly finished with the finest materials. The original fold-down rear bench seat has been refitted with new hinges, taking into account the carpets in the boot and the hatch. The instruments, switches and gauges are easy to operate and read and all functions are impeccable. The original radio as well as the ticking mechanical clock are in working order.

Engine and mechanics:
The 4. 5 litre 6-cylinder in-line engine was disassembled and overhauled during the complete restoration. Since then almost 4'000km have been driven. Mechanically, the Abbott is close to new condition and has hardly any signs of use. All checks, adjustments and a major inspection will be made fresh at the time of sale.

Chassis:
The chassis and brakes are as new and without wear, as are the engine, gearbox and final drive. The underbody is fully preserved, the chassis is powder coated and wax treated.

Driving Experience:
The smooth and whisper-quiet 6-cylinder engine, the solid 4-speed gearbox and a comfortable chassis make the super sports car of the time - the Abbott was the fastest 4-seater coupé in the world - an automobile that can keep up with today's road traffic in any situation. A long wheelbase and a luxurious and comfortable interior invite long drives. Although the Coupé is fast, a drive over a pass requires a certain amount of muscle power.

Recommendation:
The Abbott is suitable as an experience vehicle at historical events, is a welcome guest and trophy winner at Concours d'Elegance and probably one of the most elegant appearances on our roads. The excellent documentation including the original Bentley Handbook from 1953 complete the overall picture of a historically very valuable automobile.
