This car is to be auctioned at The Autumn Stafford Sale - The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show
The matching-numbers Norton 650 SS offered here has been extensively upgraded with accessories produced by former racer and famed Norton tuner, Paul Dunstall. Indeed, the Norton was first registered on 8th May 1964 to Paul's shop, Eltham Motorcycles & Scooters of London SE9. Interestingly, the cylinder head is stamped 'RC/ 35', and in an email on file Paul speculates that this 'head may have been worked on by tuner Reg Curley, who did porting work for Paul before going on to build his own Curley Nortons. Paul comments on this machine's specification in other emails. In a letter to former owner Michael Lewis, Dunstall Registrar John Woodgate states that this example is the earliest he had found up to that date (1998). The machine's specification includes swept-back exhaust pipes; 'Goldie' silencers; alloy wheel rims; clip-on handlebars; rear-set footrests; large-capacity fuel tank; racing seat; chromed headlamp shell; matching speedometer and rev counter; and a twin-leading-shoe front brake. Last run seven years ago, the machine will require recommissioning before further use. Accompanying paperwork includes the original logbook; copies of old registration documents; a copy of the Dunstall Owners Register entry; old V5/ V5C documents; Dunstall-related literature; and some old MoTs (most recent expired July 2016). There is also a colour photograph of the late Phil Read sitting on the bike. Key not required.
