Introduced at the 2008 London Motor Show, Renault stepped up its game with the Megane R26. R, the ultimate evolution of the Megane RS F1 Team R26, equipped with its 2. 0L turbo engine developing 230 hp and paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox with shorter shift ratios. And that's not all, the R26. R differentiates itself mainly on the scale with a drastic diet enabling the Renault to lose 123kg compared to an R26, therefore reaching a weight of 1, 230kg.
To achieve the latter, Renault Sport got rid of superfluous elements such as the rear seats, air conditioning, passenger and side airbags, part of the soundproofing, headlight washers, front fog lights and rear window wipers. Using lighter materials also contributed to this result, such as rear windows made of polycarbonate, the engine bonnet made of carbon fibre, bucket seats made of carbon and the substructure made of aluminium. Renault Sport has drastically transformed the Megane by applying methods which made racing automobiles successful. The result is clear: On 23rd June 2008, the R26. R set the lap record at the Nurburgring in the Traction category with a blistering time of 8 minutes and 17 seconds.
This deep-black example is the number 76 out of 230 in the UK series. But it ultimately never left France and has a left-hand drive steering wheel. First registered in March 2009, it became part of a Renault sports car enthusiast's collection. It now has a mileage of just over 34, 000km.
It was delivered by Renault Boulogne and registered for the first time on 13 March 2009 and has a left-hand drive steering wheel. Its current owner, a collector of Renault Sport creations, did not hesitate to travel all over France to acquire this example, which benefited from mechanical improvements with the addition of a dump valve, a larger intercooler and a modification to the airbox, thus increasing performance. Its last service was carried out in April 2022 and, in addition to draining the oil and changing the filters, included replacement of the accessory and timing belts, water pump, front discs and front brake pads. It has covered less than 2, 000 km since then and now has just over 34, 000 km at the time of closing this catalogue. A set of 4 additional complete wheels can be collected from the current owner.
The R26. R has a special place in the pantheon of the Renault Sport department alongside the Clio Williams, the Spider, the Clio V6? Renault Sport ceased to exist in 2021 after 45 years of reign; It has nonetheless left us with some of the best sports cars ever made (including this numbered R26. R) and piece of history for any collector of French sport cars or gentleman drivers, seduced by the exceptional qualities of this ultimate version.
