1948 Bentley MkVI Saloon, Groud-up Restoration to v high std For Sale

Description

1948 Bentley Mk VI Saloon

Billed as the ?Silent Sports Car? for Town & Country use. Here we have a truly fine example, in dual grey bodywork with glass-like finish and factory perfect structural fit and door shut lines. The plush interior has been newly refurbished at high cost, and the car appears to drive as good as the day it left the Crewe Works.

Other features include original push-button wireless, fast-drop front windows, steel sunroof, optional front Spotlight (Driving Light) The car is also equipped with nicely figured walnut picnic tables for the use of the rear passengers.

The full history is unknown, but the car has been expertly restored to very high standard and is immaculate, underneath too. From the Factory Build Sheets, we see that the car (numbered 2062) was delivered in October 1948, via Offord Garages, to it?s first private owner, a Mr. E. C. Bushford. After three years, it changed hands to a Mr W Freund, who kept it for nineteen years. The next recorded keeper was G. J. Offord, a Director of the supplying Rolls Royce/ Bentley Agency we guess, in any event, he was obviously quite a prosperous individual, as he switched the registration number to his valuable private plate JGO1. Sadly this is no longer with the car, as it reverted back to its original number after he sold it (JGO1 is still on the UK Register, but attached to a more mundane 2005 Mercedes Benz nowadays)

In the late nineties, the Bentley was in the possession of a classic car enthusiast, who kept it for twenty odd years but reportedly never drove it, just kept it statically indoors. The subsequent owner was obviously a Marque perfectionist and spent a small fortune having the existing leather interior, which was only slightly worn, completely renewed by a Rolls Royce expert, seats, carpet, door cards, headlining all now in better than new condition, as can be seen from the above pictures. It is estimated that he wouldn?t have had much change from £10, 000 if it was invoiced at current London RR rates. It is, without doubt, the finest Mk 6 Bentley interior we have ever seen.

Possibly due to unforeseen circumstances, the car is now up for sale, which presents a unique opportunity for a new owner to xperience the thrill of getting behind the wheel of this beautiful Bentley Motorcar on a lovely sunny Sunday drive. Offered with any trial or engineering inspection.

Comes with V5, old service invoices, past MoT?s, old logbook, owner?s handbook, RR service manual, original sales brochure and an interesting book on Mk 6 Bentleys. For further info, call John on number above. Car located in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. Transport arranged at £1. 70 pr/ mile, (one way only charged) Usual Dealer facilities.

See our website Link above for Short Vid of the Bentley (not quite up to Cecil B. DeMille standards, but hope you get the picture)

Historical Information

Following the end of World War II and a period of intensive manufacture of aero engines, Rolls Royce Motors were to relocate their motor car division to Crewe. At a difficult time for prestige car production and with a desperate need for exports, the Bentley Mk VI was introduced in May 1946, Aimed at the emerging 'owner-driver' luxury car market, it was closely based on the 1939 Mk V (of which only fifteen were produced).

Built around a massive cruciform-braced chassis with independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, it was fitted with a freshly developed 4257cc OISE straight-six engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox.

The most unusual feature of the Mark 6 was the fitment of a pressed steel body at the factory whereas previous Rolls Royce and Bentley motor cars had always been supplied in chassis form, to be fitted with owner?s choice of coachwork. The standard saloon body was by Pressed Steel Ltd and of compact appearance, which appealed greatly to the lucrative North American market where there was a strong demand for a ?self-drive? type of Bentley.

The Autocar Magazine summed it up as follows:-

?A British name with which to conjure: the 41/ 4 litre Bentley of today have no peers as ultra high-speed cars of singular refinement?.
