Here’s something you won’t find available too often, a fully race prepared road legal MKIII Spitfire, it’s stop you in your tracks and stare stunning and has a new MOT, on the button, ready to drive away today.
Same wealthy owner for the last 13 years, the car is known to have raced as far back as 1983, it’s had huge investment over the decades and is in incredibly solid condition throughout and fully specked up for racing. The car has just passed its MOT with no advisories and is road legal, it starts runs and drives as intended with everything working correctly all the lights, indicators, wipers, horn, washers and it sounds awesome if you hit the go pedal hard.
We are not race car experts but can point out what we know, under the lightweight fiberglass bonnet the car is fitted with a tuned and modified engine for which there are multiple invoices in the history file, several from famed Triumph racing company “Jigsaw” and others for high performance cam shafts and rebuilds, we do not know the claimed BHP but can say that its significantly faster than a standard MKIII spitfire, it’s coupled to a 4 speed gearbox with a working column shift overdrive. It was suggested to us when we purchased the car that the entire engine is the work of Jigsaw Racing Triumph specialists, but we cannot confirm that from the available history.
It has just had a pair of fully reconditioned SU carbs fitted, rebuilt by Turner Carbs of Grantham, these have currently been toned down milder general use and are perfectly balanced. There is a bespoke ally oil catch can fitted, adjustable front shocks, as new front brake callipers and discs, a fire suppression system with nozzles in the engine bay and drivers footwell, that can be operated from the cockpit or externally from the bulkhead, along with an electrical isolator switch, the wind down side windows are Perspex, three point harness’s on both seats, rear solid red racing lamp, full roll cage (with scrutineering stickers), braided hoses, fuel cut off swich, elec cooling fan, race type “click” fuel filler cap and probably lots more modifications we have missed, it has not wanted for anything or lacked investment.
The car is rock solid throughout, see the video which shows the underside and inside the boot. The paintwork is generally very good all round with minor imperfections on close inspection, whichever angle you view it this car has the wow factor. Running a set of really good Minilite style alloys with excellent tyres all round. Comes with a purpose built full tonneau cover that can be fully closed, drivers side open or fully open, no other hood or weather gear supplied.
Sadly we have very little information regarding its race history, from reading the requirements of several racing clubs the car appears to meet all the criteria to go racing and certainly ticks all the boxes for the Historic Sports Car Club, the buyer would need to satisfy themselves of its suitability for any intended race use, we do know the fitted 3 point harnesses would need upgrading to dated and approved race versions. There are a handful of time tickets from the National Drag Car Club in the history file, two of them dated in 1983, the others undated and the afore mentioned roll cage has some faded scrutineering stickers, we have written to the address of the former keeper (a substantial property valued in access of £1 million) asking for any available history and as yet had no reply, we suspect the car entered the motor trade due to bereavement but have no confirmation.
We have the full current and a previous logbook, the car is HPI clear with all the correct and original identification plates and is showing just 27k miles, we cannot confirm these low miles but if it’s been used sparingly for racing since the early 80’s who knows. The car currently shows as colour red on the current and previous logbook, the blue paint is aged and been on for many years and we suspect the current long term only never updated the details after a paint job, we will update them correctly when we change it into the lucky new owners name, there are masses of receipts and invoices but they do not form a full history of the car.
Nothing hidden, nothing to hide, comprehensively, described, pictured and videoed, any inspection of any kind welcome. Any test pilots looking to come and personally judge its performance can gladly do so after placing a damage deposit of the full asking price into our hands, chauffeured test rides available with no up front cost.
A truly stunning Spitfire, it’s on a “Steve McQueen” level of coolness, it’s unique in its build spec and history and will be admired and heavily discussed wherever you take it.
