Description
Every now and then you get a car in that is a little bit more special and stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons. There is no denying the Austin Healey brand being one of the most wanted 1950's and 60's classics. Their models from the beautiful but basic BN1 in the early 1950's through to the roaring six cylinder BJ8's of the late 1960's offered a unique take on the British sports car and gave consumers a headache for choice against the Jaguar E-type and the Triumph Tr4/ 5. Most of us will have a favourite Healey model, but there is no denying the low sporty stance of an early 3000.
The car we have here will tick many boxes and will appeal to more than the prospective classic car buyer looking for a topflight Healey. This example does transcend that, with its history and restoration build. Born on 20th May 1963 and delivered to the Donald Healey Motor Company as 1 of 29 RHD cars sold for export in 1963. Its life would not begin in the UK or the USA as a high percentage did. XMW 540A was exported to Ghana, where it would spend the next 55 years. Once owned by the Chief Justice of Kenya, Frederick Kwasi Apaloo, In 2017 the car was repatriated where it would find itself in the workshops of JME of Leamington Spa Ltd (The Capeworks) where its new owner funded an extensive, no expense spared restoration. Using as many original components as possible to obtain the original character of the car and complimented by new, uprated parts, the final build is nothing but a superb high quality build. Brand new Austin Healey Spares Chassis/ Original panels with matching BMIHT body number, Original engine , totally rebuilt with new pistons, upgraded cam, heavy duty oil pump, rally sump, restored gearbox and overdrive, 'Works' O/ D gearstick, Denis Welch manifolds and exhaust, electric fan, Dynator Alternator, Elec ign, Elec fuel pump, spin on oil filter, Gear reduction starter motor, rear oil seal conversion, upgraded radiator, engine run in and performing expectation. Other upgrades inc. 3 point works seat belts, under dash USB charging, Front and rear Rose joint handling kit, Avon tyres, 3 Ear spinners, front driving lights, full leather throughout, Everflex hood, Tonneau and hood bag, Dynamat throughout, Original jack and tools, all brightwork re-chromed, new glass throughout, Novol paint system throughout.
The history file comes with hundreds of restoration photographs and invoices.
This is as close to a new Healey BJ7 as possible and to restore a car like this today would cost over £150, 000!
Painted in Porsche Anthracite Grey and sitting on black painted wires, this example looks like an Austin Healey 3000 rebirth for the modern era and will appeal to collectors of more modern sports cars. Hand on heart, in my opinion, this is one the best cars i have ever seen at Sherwood Restorations in over 30 years.
