JAGUAR S-TYPE MODEL HISTORY
Launched in 1963, the Jaguar S-Type was a major development of the popular MK II offering customers a more luxurious alternative. Central to achieving this was the introduction of independent rear suspension replacing the MK II’s live rear axle. This provided the S-Type with a much smoother ride, more refined road manners and more predictable handling – losing the characteristic tail-happy nature of the MK II. At the time, this suspension was a revelation and remained the benchmark for which other luxury saloons were judged by until the 1980s.

Available with either the proven 3. 4 or 3. 8-litre XK engine, the S-Type provided smooth and effortless performance delivered through a 4-speed manual with optional overdrive, or 3- automatic transmission. The MK II’s excessively low geared 4. 3 turns lock-to-lock steering was replaced by a Burman 3. 5 turns lock-to-lock unit which further improved the S-Type’s driver appeal with much more feel on the road.

With its styling overseen by Sir William Lyons himself, visually, the S-Type had much longer rear bodywork than the MK II providing a much larger boot, and the roofline was lowered, made flatter and extended backward to give a more squat, purposeful poise on the road.
The interior was taken to the next level with a plusher appearance and more liberal use of wood veneers. It also saw the introduction of a much more effective heating and ventilation system, offering separate control for both driver and front seat passenger. Rear seat passengers had more leg room and the front seats were widened to almost appear as a full-width bench.

The Jaguar S-Type is perhaps best summed up by the words of Motor Magazine in 1964: "It is one of the most comfortably sprung cars in the world and it will maintain its extremely high cruising speeds with the utmost safety and stability over road surfaces which demand a considerable reduction in speed from most cars. It remains, however, a very fast car indeed with a smooth and effortless engine and the ability to return remarkable average speeds without tiring the driver at all."

After very nearly 25, 000 models were manufactured, production ceased in 1968 with the introduction of the XJ6.
