Rover's 1980s renaissance was achieved with the technical collaboration of Honda, the range-topping 800 Series, introduced in 1986, being just one of the fruits of this Anglo-Japanese union. The base engine was Rover's SOHC O-series unit, while further up the range there was the new 2. 0-litre 16-valve twin-cam and Honda-sourced 2. 5- and 2. 7-litre 24-valve V6s, the latter duo available with either a dual-range four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The 'Sterling' name was first applied to the 800-Series V6 saloon in 1988, signifying the model's most luxurious expression: Connolly leather upholstery, air conditioning, electrically heated and adjustable front seats, cruise control and anti-lock brakes all being included in the standard package. Re-styled for 1992, the model followed the prevailing 'retro' fashion, gaining a traditional-looking Rover front grille.
Manufactured in 1997 and first registered on the road on the 23rd of May that year, the 825 Sterling was finished from the factory in the striking and attractive colour scheme of Cayman Blue paintwork with complementary Cream leather interior upholstery. Utilising the 2. 5-litre quad-cam engine, it is mated to the rare and desirable five-speed manual gearbox, which is scarce to find in Coupe form. The Rover has covered some 67, 500 miles from new, and is fitted with a full stainless steel exhaust system. ‘P35 DTT’ is supplied with the original stamped service book, that shows twelve service entries, many of which have been completed by main dealers. Benefitting from a cambelt change some 4, 000 miles ago and more recently fitted with new brake pads throughout and track rod ends approximately 3, 000 miles previous, the Sterling is offered with a current V5C document and a no advisory MOT certificate until January 2025. This Sterling Coupe is a pleasingly original and unmolested example of an increasingly appreciated modern classic.
