Description

This is one of the most magnificent cars ever produced, a modern design classic and rarely available in the current market. This is a 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet by Pininfarina. Finished in Light Blue with Dark Blue interior. She starts and drives well but needs a certain amount of recommissioning before use this summer! This is the more desirable Series II version of this classic Pinin Farina design!

The current Alfa Romeo conceals as beautiful a chassis as ever with four-wheel independent suspension and a six-cylinder twin overhead camshaft un-supercharged engine...' - The Autocar, July 11th 1947.

Its Portello factory devastated by wartime bombing, Alfa Romeo did not resume car production until 1946 with, inevitably, a pre-war carry-over, the 6C 2500 in a variety of new guises forming the basis of the Milanese marque's post-war recovery. One of the legendary Vittorio Jano's final designs for Alfa Romeo, and last of the separate-chassis Alfas, the 2500 had debuted in 1939 and was developed from the 2300. Styled in-house but strongly influenced by Touring, the five-seater Freccia d'Oro (Golden Arrow) sports saloon was built alongside coupé and cabriolet versions featuring bodies by the likes of Pinin Farina, Touring and Ghia, plus a six/ seven-seater berlina on a longer wheelbase.

The Alfa tradition of building driver's cars par excellence was upheld by the 2500, for although the box-section chassis was no longer state-of-the-art, it boasted all-independent suspension, generously-sized brakes, fast-geared steering and an unusually slick column-mounted gearchange. The engine was, of course, the latest version of Alfa's race-developed double-overhead-camshaft 'six', its 2, 443cc displacement having been arrived at by enlarging the bore of the 2300. Maximum power ranged from 90bhp in single-carburettor Sport guise to 105bhp in the triple-carburettor Super Sport.

Built on the 28th December 1948, this Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet, bodied by Pinin Farina, was delivered to Camogli, Italy, on May 5, 1949. We find the car's trace in California, July 5, 1983, still in its original colour, Celeste Coldinava. Then owned by Lucille E. Newman of Tarzana, California, the 6C was frequently used as evidenced by various photographs from period. Registered as '49 ALFA', the 6C was sold by Lucille E. Newman on July 15, 1986, the odometer reading 67, 370 Km's. On June 4, 1987, the Alfa Romeo was sold through C. C. I. (Classic Car Invest) to Sig. Luciano Bertolero in Turin for 5. 5 million Lire. On May 18, 1988 it was acquired by Luigi Rendo from Luciano Bertolero for 9 million Lire.

Registered since November 8, 1988 at the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo, under number 87, it remained for many years stored until it took its place in the collection of its previous owner in 2019. Today, chassis 916419 presents an elegant patina and is just asking for the necessary work to be enjoyed on the road again. Its body has retained its original celestial blue while the interior most certainly experienced a quality restoration during the 1980s to retain a very nice presentation, even 40 years later. Its Certificato di Origine, published by Alfa Romeo Classiche in 2019, tells us that it was originally equipped with the engine No. 926739. It now has the, correct type, engine No. 926045. This 6C convertible will be sold with a copy of its American title, its 1987 customs clearance form and Full UK Registration with all taxes paid, the Alfa Romeo certificate as well as various documents allowing us to trace its history. The car starts and runs well but needs the brakes attending to, after many years in storage, but is a solid and interesting project which will provide amazing open top motoring later in the summer!

Sober and elegant, this Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet Pinin Farina is an exciting project for any lover of classic Alfa Romeo, a rare automobile that can also participate in touristic rallies, concours d'élégance or simply be driven with the whole family thanks to its four real seats! They rarely come available for sale and never at this price. The car is in the UK, Fully UK Registered, and can be exported and registered anywhere in the world.
