Here we have for sale a 1979 Land Rover® Series 3 Genuine Station Wagon, with exceptional history since new. AUU was originally sold on 28/ 02/ 1979 by Henleys Central London, in Berkley Square – where the current Bentley & Ferrari Dealership is today. Not only does this car come with a spare set of keys, but also the original owners manual and British Leyland “supercover handbook” with the service passport & associated receipts – where it was serviced until it reached 37, 000 miles by BL dealers in Cornwall and Bedford in 1987. MOTs then start from here until all the way until 2019, where the mileage was recorded as 76, 433 miles. To all intents and purposes and having spoken to the keeper since – the mileage is entirely genuine at just 92, 119.
As a genuine station wagon, this Series 3 enjoys all the trappings thereof – Safari roof, alpine lights, sliding rear windows and the iconic Station Wagon badging. It is pleasing to note that the bodywork has survived in nice, straight condition as the photos show – and although the paint is not a fresh job, it looks just right on a vehicle of this age and with this level of provenance. There are additional side steps, alongside a rear tow bar, which may have been factory fitted options when new. LED side lights and indicators mean better reliability – meaning no tricky bulb changes or changing poorly earthed standard lights.
The interior of a station wagon is quite a bit more “plush” than a standard Series 3, and this vehicle is no exception to that rule – it is great to see the individual tip up seats surviving in a usable condition, along with a really nice headlining and some deluxe door cards too. The front has a set of three deluxe seats, affording accomodation for a large family! The original tunnel cover also survives which, along with the fitment of Series deluxe matting throughout, gives the vehicle style and purpose.
Out on the road, the petrol engine pulls just as it should and the addition of the parabolic springs make for a compliant and pleasing period driving experience. One can really tell the genuinely low mileage when behind the wheel, as the whole vehicle just feels “right” on the road…. we love it.
If you are looking for a usable station wagon, with original low miles and a fantastic history, then this vehicle should prove to be a worthy addition to the family. With MOT & Tax Exemption, along with classic insurances, it should also be frugal to run and maintain as a family asset.
