Description

Introduced in 1927 by the Coventry car builder, the Armstrong Siddeley 15HP model was available in several body configurations. This car features the later 2, 169cc version of the six cylinder engine fitted to this model. It developed 50BHP at 2500 rpm (42mph). It had a claimed maximum speed of 65mph. The Long 15 features a four-speed pre-select gearbox and spiral bevel rear axle. This example was originaly sold to a Captain Lindley of Skellingthorpe Hall, Lincolnshire in February 1933. During its appearance in the filming of 'Hope and Glory' in 1987, the car was badly painted black and was damaged. A total rebuild began in 1989 with major work to the body, engine and interior trim. the internal woodwork was also restored to its present beautiful appearance. The engine rebuild was carried out by Kingston Engine Services. The crankshaft was reground and had new white metal bearings. It was rebored, had new valve inserts and seats fitted along with six new pistons. Total mileage covered since then is approximately 15, 000. For a time it was owned by the proprietor of a wedding hire company and had a maroon and cream finish. A further major program of work began in 2005 with a bare-metal repaint in the present maroon over black colour scheme. A full retrim included beautiful red leather seating, red carpets and a new headlining. Extensive re-chroming was also done. There is a comprehensive record of maintenance, including a 'Distributor Doctor' electronic ignition upgrade in 2018. During the last ownership, engine, gearbox, axle and steering box oils have been changed. All interior and exterior lights have been internally cleaned. The carburettor has been removed, cleaned, and adjusted. The starter motor has also been properly serviced and lubricated. The car comes with a good sized trunk, and several operating and maintenance manuals. There are lots of invoices, articles and photographs of interest to previous owners. In all 9, 468 15HP cars were built between 1927 and 1934. Of these only about 70 survive, with only half that number on the road. This is a rare and handsome quality-built classic luxury saloon from a period when England produced some of the world's finest cars.
One of only two Pre-War Armstrong Siddeley saloons we have sold in the past seventeen years, this very rare Long 15 was previously sold by us in 2019. It sold for £18, 000 so quickly that it was never actually listed for sale on our website It is now back on the market due to the sad demise of its enthusiastic local owner who has cherished this gorgeous example. This is the car that features on the website of the Armstrong Siddeley Heritage Trust and amongst the photographs in its substantial history file are two taken on the set of the 1987 epic wartime drama 'Hope and Glory'. One photograph features Academy Award nominee, Scottish actor, the late Ian Bannen of 'Flight of the Phoenix' fame at the wheel. Attractively priced, we fully expect a very quick sale once again.
