Immaculate condition
A bit of history -
Brainchild of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo who set out to produce the ultimate, useable, balanced 'Super Tourer'
Unveiled in 1996, Ferrari surprised the motoring world with a return to the classic front engine, V12 / 2 seat configuration for their flagship model, a format not seen since the 365 GTB/ 4 'Daytona'.
Lapping Ferraris Fiorano test track more than 3 seconds faster than the mighty mid-engine F512M (which it was replacing) - the 550 Maranello was an instant success with the critics.
Performance -
Power came from a magnificent Tipo F133 DOHC 5. 5 litre 65' V12 boasting 4 valve heads, Mahle forged pistons, Titanium rods, Bosch Motronic M5. 2 system and a Variable 'back pressure' exhaust (as seen in the F50 hyper car)
485 bhp @ 7900 rpm
419 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm
199 mph Top Speed
4. 4 seconds 0 - 62 mph
Handling and drive -
With a lightweight Pininfarina all aluminium body over a tubular chassis (designated Tipo F133 AB) the 550 weighed in at 1690 kg. Positioning of the gearbox and massive 114litre fuel tank provided perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution. Suspension - independent double wishbone, co-axial springs, gas filled telescopic dampers (electronically adjustable). With high speed stability in mind Ferrari allegedly spent some 5000 hours in the wind tunnel with the 550. Advanced underbody aerodynamics supplying balanced down force over each axle. The reward for all these efforts demonstrated with their World Speed Record where they managed to cover 100km at an average speed of 188. 88 mph!
In 2004, EVO magazine brought together the ten greatest drivers’ cars of the previous decade. These included the Lotus Elise 135, BMW M3, Honda NSX-R, Pagani Zonda C12S and two generations of Porsche’s 911 GT3. Judged best of them all? The 550 Maranello. ‘There’s never been a supercar that’s so exploitable and rounded in its abilities’ was the conclusion.
