Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The May Online Timed Auction on Thursday the 30th of May, Online. Background: MV Agusta debuted the 175 at the Milan Motorcycle Show in late 1952, with production commencing the following year – under a decade since the former aviation firm manufactured its first two-wheeled machine. The 175 was another milestone for Count Agusta’s firm – its first production bike with a four-stroke engine. During its seven-year production life, the 175 series was the company’s best-seller.
The unit-construction single-cylinder power unit featured a chain-driven overhead camshaft, operating the valves via rocker arms. Initially the 175 was offered as a Tourer (CST/ CSTL) with 8hp at 5, 600rpm but a Sports model (175 CS) soon followed, with power upped to 11hp at 6, 700rpm, a cut above rivals similar machinery and which - paired with lower handlebars to give a more sporting riding position - offered a top speed of 70mph. Very few family cars of the early 1950s could claim to achieve that speed. Plenty of Italian racing red paint adorned its twin-tube frame.
Around 4, 500 examples of the 175 CS were produced and the machines soon attracted the nickname Disco Volante (Flying Saucer) from Italian motorcycle fans, as they saw it’s distinctive fuel-tank shape as connected to ‘a vehicle from another galaxy’. MV Agusta adopted the name in its official model history.
The bike:
Like every MV Agusta, this 175 began its life in Cascina Costa in Italy and it has lived most of its life in the country of its birth, before being imported into the UK in 1995.
This 175 is a superb survivor and a wonderful example of a landmark model for the marque. It’s in beautiful condition throughout and wears its 67 years lightly, with barely a mark - the paint on frame and tank are lovely, as is the brightwork.
The four-stroke engine is mechanically perfect, benefitting from a rare Dellorto SS25 carburettor upgrade, while the running gear is also in first-class condition. This Agusta runs and rides perfectly, on its period-perfect Borrani wires and excellent tyres. An MPH speedo allows the rider to stay on just the right side of the law and the MV Agusta heritage certification is contained in the history file.
Summary: This pretty and period-correct MV Agusta 175 CS presents beautifully and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience a landmark Italian motorcycle from one of the great marques.
