Description

The Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet, W128 model, is a car that left its mark on the automotive history of the late 1950s. Launched in 1958 and produced until 1960, the W128 is one of the last models of the Ponton range, known for its elegant design and technical advances. This particular model belongs to the 220 SE series, where the ‘SE’ stands for fuel injection (Einspritzung in German), a relatively advanced technology for the era, delivering better performance and optimised fuel consumption.

The 220 SE Cabriolet is equipped with a 2. 2‑litre inline‑six engine, developing around 115 horsepower, which was quite punchy for its time. It could reach a top speed of around 160 km/ h. The W128 model is also notable for its driving comfort, thanks to its coil‑spring suspension and its luxurious cabin, finished in high‑quality wood and leather, as was customary in Mercedes‑Benz luxury models.

Available in coupe and cabriolet, the W128 Cabriolet is a rare and elegant car, whose design influenced subsequent generations. With its long wheelbase, smooth lines and refined interior, it has captivated enthusiasts of fine motor cars. The W128 models are also regarded as the final examples of the Ponton range, a name given to Mercedes models of that era because of their rounded styling and compact silhouette.

Only 1, 112 examples of the 220 SE Cabriolet W128 were produced, making it highly sought after by collectors. The W128 was replaced by the Mercedes 220 SEb, of the W111 series, which adopted a more angular design, marking a turning point in Mercedes-Benz styling.

Today, the 220 SE Cabriolet W128 is regarded as a symbol of 1950s elegance and technical innovation, embodying Mercedes-Benz refinement and excellence. Its rarity and timeless styling make it highly sought after in the classic car market.

This 1958 example is from the very first series, produced in only 118 units that year. Aside from a few signs of use on the bodywork, this W128 is in exceptional condition, its interior is sumptuous in every respect. The hood is in perfect condition and operates without fault.

The car was purchased by its current owner in 2011, and since then he has covered just over 7, 000 km.

The car is currently registered on standard Belgian plates.
