Registration: BE registered Chassis number: L649 Engine number: UBS6 1/ 2 - 610 1, 991 cc, in-line 6-cylinder engine, 90 bhp, 4-speed manual gearbox GET TO KNOW THE CAR In the 1930s, AC production was still limited, but it had become so specialised that it could be customised for each customer. From 1936, there was a range of 2-litre roadsters and sports cars, including coupes and saloons, which were sometimes known as As. The 16/ 80 and 16/ 90 had much in common, as both were built on a short wheelbase chassis with the original AC inline six producing 80bhp. In 1939, AC offered a 90bhp supercharged engine as an option for the 16/ 90, but only 5 examples were built out of a total production (16/ 80 and 16/ 90 together) of just 42 cars. These two-seater cars were equipped to a high standard and the top speed of the 16/ 90 exceeded 100mph. FREDDIE MARCH (The Earl March) 5/ 2/ 1904 - 2/ 11/ 1989 Frederick Charles Gordon-Lennox, 9th Duke of Richmond, has a fascinating history that revolves mainly around the worlds of motor racing and aviation. He worked in Bentley's service department under the assumed name of 'Freddie March' to familiarise himself with cars. He raced at Brooklands and, after the Second World War, turned Goodwood airfield into the motor racing circuit it is today. Freddie March designed the bodywork for this AC 16/ 90 in 1936. Each year, the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation is celebrated at the Goodwood motor racing circuit, an event that marks the start of the Revival Weekend. AUTHENTIC Along the beautiful lines, you'll find age and the wear of time. This car is by far the most original and best preserved pre-war car we have ever had the pleasure of handling, it really is an exquisite 'jewel' that gives the car an extra dimension that is hard to find but much desired in cars as such. Combined with the power and control, it's hard to keep your foot off the accelerator. It's quick, revs high and sounds surprisingly sporty. ON THE DRIVE Driving this AC is a real revelation, as it's easy to handle and very comfortable. The brakes are surprisingly good and the engine pulls hard. The sound of the in-line six-cylinder engine is simply magnificent, and the suspension can be adjusted from the dashboard to any position between soft and hard on the front and rear axles. And all this in 1938! The car is in very good condition and drives very well, with patinated black paint and perfectly patinated black leather upholstery. Repaired but not restored, this car makes my hair stand on end when I look at it, a once in a lifetime opportunity! The reason this car is for sale is because it is too special and original to be used in the tough rallies the owner wanted to do, gentle rallies and general use are fine, but please take care of this gem.
