Description
HISTORY OF THE S-Class W108/ W109 The Mercedes S-Class W108/ W109 was introduced in 1965 as a stylistic evolution of the S-Class saloons. This new generation of the S-Class was based on the W111 coupé designed a few years earlier by Paul Bracq, the father of the Pagode. In terms of technology and style, this car was very similar to the SL cabriolet imagined by the famous French designer. The W108/ W109s were successively equipped with in-line 6-cylinder engines ranging from 2. 5l to 3. 0, including the legendary 2. 8 of the 280. As for the W109, they all bore the 280 or 300 badges, and were in the SEL version, i. e. the long saloon type. These were equipped exclusively with V8 engines (3. 5l, 4. 5l and 6. 3l) and most often with air suspension. The W108/ W109 were gradually replaced in 1972/ 1973 by the brand new generation of S-Class, the even more technologically advanced W116.
