Description

Classic Car Design offers you this powerful Ford Mustang V8 289 coupé styled as a “racing” variant. Beyond the model, it’s the workmanship that is impressive! Its owner, a member of the Mustang Club of France, has been driving a Mustang for many years. He has spent without counting and poured countless hours to fulfil his wish. A dossier of invoices and photos 5 cm thick retraces the restoration and preparation of the car. More than €73, 000 (seventy-three thousand) was invested over a period of almost 6 years. Since then, the car has covered just over 2, 600 km. It benefits from an LP VRH of the FIA / FFSA (Historic Regularity Vehicle Pass) in the “touring” category.

It is impossible to deliver the exhaustive list of everything that has been carried out but here is a synthesis:
The base car is a Californian code C model 66 that was first registered in 1965. It has been completely dismantled to work on the entire bodywork and fit the homologated roll cage. The stunning “Sylver blue” now covers the whole shell. The yellow stripe is a nod to the famous AC Cobra 289 FIA. The front bumper has given way to a Shelby-type skirt topped with Oscar Cibié.

Mechanically, everything has been redone or installed new. The Ford Racing 302 ci engine is fitted with ICON forged pistons and Eagle H-beam connecting rods. It is fed by a Holley 670 cfm carburettor on an Edelbrock Performer intake. It also benefits from a complete MSD ignition, an oil cooler with a Milodon high-capacity oil pan. In line with the 4-into-1 headers, the stainless steel exhaust with side exits has been custom-made. This engine is paired with a Top-loader 4-speed gearbox that transmits power to the locked differential. There is no power steering or power braking. Still drums at the rear, the front braking comprises 4-piston calipers and 280mm Wilwood discs. Control is via a pedal box from the same brand. Suspension entrusted to 4 Koni units. As with the Shelby, the upper control arm mounts have been moved and the rear axle is equipped with tie rods. The wheels are American Racing 6x15 mounted with semi-slick tyres.

In the cockpit, the atmosphere is sporty too, even if the carpets and door panels are present. You can see the dashboard which groups a complete Autometer instrumentation. Everything is there to compete in regularity rallies and track sessions: Lecarra steering wheel, bucket seats, harness, brake balance control, Tripmaster, extinguishers including one with dual interior/ exterior control and nozzles in the cabin and engine bay, cut-off switch… The battery sits in the boot. You also find the large-capacity tank with vertical filling.

Having had the chance to drive this beast on track and to act as co-driver on a historic rally, I can assure you that this Pony car is a bomb worthy of the Mustang myth!
